2018 NCAC Cross Country Championships Central

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) released its 2018 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country pre-championships polls on Monday (Oct. 22) and the Oberlin Yeowomen were tabbed as the favorites on the women’s side, while the defending champion DePauw Tigers were selected to repeat on the men’s side according to balloting by conference coaches.

The Yeowomen, who last won the league title in 2014, earned five first-place votes totaling 61 points, while defending conference champion Allegheny secured the remaining three first-place votes, compiling 58 points. The Gator women have won a conference-best 15 cross country titles. Kenyon checked in at third with 49 points, while DePauw and Wooster tied for fourth with 32 points apiece. The final three spots in the poll were occupied by Ohio Wesleyan (23), Denison (22) and Wittenberg (10).

The DePauw men look for their second championship since joining the conference for the 2011 season. The Tigers received all nine first-place votes totaling the maximum 81 points. Wooster was voted second, receiving 68 points; a second-place finish for Wooster would be its highest finish since 2001 when the team finished as the runner-up. Allegheny was tabbed third with 60 points while Wabash (55) and Denison (43) rounded out the top half of the field. Oberlin (35), Kenyon (32), Ohio Wesleyan (20) and Wittenberg (11) finished out the nine-team field.

Four of the top five women’s finishers from 2017 return for this season’s championships. Defending NCAC champion, Linnea Halsten (Madison, Wis./East) of Oberlin, won the 2017 women’s title by 34 seconds (21:23.3) and looks to repeat as champion. Allegheny's Sarah Hevener (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and Emily Forner (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) along with Kenyon's Eleanor Tetreault (Portland, Ore./Franklin) also return after posting top-five finishes last season.

On the men’s side, Wabash’s Dominic Patacsil (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) captured the 2017 NCAC title in his junior season and returns for his final go-around at the championships. Allegheny's Matt Svetz (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and DePauw's Paul Christian (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) also return to the NCAC Championships after posting top-five finishes last season.

The 2018 NCAC Cross Country Championships will be Saturday, Oct. 27, at Liberty Park in Powell, Ohio. The women’s race will begin at 11 am, while the men’s race will begin at 11:45 am. Ohio Wesleyan is serving as the host for the championships.
