North Coast Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week – Oct. 21
Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Ryan Lesmez, Ohio Wesleyan
Ohio Wesleyan senior Ryan Lesmez (Arlington, VA/Yorktown) finished seventh among 342 individuals at the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble. Lesmez timed in at 24:52.5 and was the top conference finisher at the invitational which also included runners from Oberlin and Wabash.
Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Molly Tarvin, Allegheny
Allegheny sophomore Molly Tarvin (New Tripoli, PA/Northwest Lehigh) led the Gators to a first place finish out of a field of 26 teams at the Gettysburg Invitational. Tarvin finished fifth overall among 167 runners, completing the 6,000-meter course with a time of 23:08.0. It was the first team victory of the season for Allegheny.
Field Hockey Athlete of the Week – Charlotte Godfrey, Denison
Denison junior Charlotte Godfrey (Denver, CO/Cherry Creek) helped the Big Red to a 2-0 week in conference play. Godfrey started the week with a goal in a 2-0 victory at Ohio Wesleyan before adding a game-winner and two assists against Allegheny. The victories helped the Big Red improve to 10-3 overall, 3-1 in NCAC action.
Offensive Football Athlete of the Week – Dwaine Barber, Allegheny
Allegheny senior wide receiver Dwaine Barber (Hialeah, FL/Hialeah Gardens) recorded a career-high 182 yards on seven receptions, besting his previous career-high of 131 yards, in Saturday’s conference victory over Kenyon. Of the seven receptions, three went for touchdowns on strikes of 86, 53 and seven yards.
Defensive Football Athlete of the Week – Devin White, Oberlin
Oberlin senior linebacker Devin White (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) played a large role in Oberlin’s first shutout victory since 2013 as he recorded two interceptions, forced a fumble, and posted seven tackles in the Yeomen’s 7-0 win over Hiram. In the third quarter, he thwarted a potential scoring drive by forcing a Hiram fumble at the Oberlin 10-yard line while his first of two fourth-quarter interceptions came deep in Yeomen territory as he stepped in front of a pass at the Oberlin nine-yard line.
Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week – Ben Scherman, Denison
Denison sophomore Ben Scherman (Wilmette, IL/Loyola Academy) took home medalist honors at the Virtues Fall Shootout after carding seven birdies during the final round to finish with a new career-low round of 68 (-4) and a three-under-par 141. Sunday’s 68 bested his previous career-low of 69 set during the second round of the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate this past April. Denison finished second overall at the tournament.
Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week – Emmy Timberlake, Denison
Denison’s Emmy Timberlake (Charlottesville, VA/Charlottesville) was the individual champion at the Gray Wolf Invitational hosted by Lourdes University. The senior fired-off a single round of 79 to help Denison win the invitational, its third team victory of the season.
Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week – Bennett Anderson, Wooster
Wooster sophomore Bennett Anderson (Urbana, IL/Urbana) brought the Fighting Scots back from a 1-0 deficit, scoring two goals to defeat Wittenberg 2-1 in overtime. Anderson scored in the 58th minute and then again in the 92nd minute to clinch it. Wooster went 2-0 on the week, also defeating Hiram, 1-0.
Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week – Emily Orr, Allegheny
Allegheny sophomore Emily Orr (Coraopolis, PA/Moon Area) recorded a goal and an assist in the Gators’ 3-2 victory over Oberlin, including the game-winner in the 61st minute. Orr then finished her week with another goal in a 2-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.
Women’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week – Morgan Stearley, DePauw
DePauw senior Morgan Stearley (Center Point, IN/Northview) was instrumental in the Tigers 2-0 week. Stearley began with a double-double against Kenyon, producing 18 kills and 11 digs before adding another 11 kills in a sweep over Oberlin. On the week, the right-side hitter compiled 29 kills (4.83 k/s), 13 digs (2.17 d/s) and a .436 hitting percentage.
Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week – Richie Kurlich, Denison
Denison sophomore Richie Kurlich (Kent, OH/Walsh Jesuit) helped lead the Big Red to a second-place finish at the Akron Zips Classic. Kurlich won the 200 breaststroke with a ‘B’ cut time of 2:00.52, a meet record and the fastest Division III time of the season. He also finished second in the 100 breaststroke (56.69) and third in the 200 IM (1:53.75). Kurlich also swam a leg of two relays, the 200 medley relay (1:34.05) and the 400 medley relay (3:24.00).
Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week – Emily Thompson, DePauw
DePauw freshman Emily Thompson (Fort Washington, PA/Germantown Academy) helped lead the Tigers to a top-five finish at the Indiana Intercollegiates hosted by Purdue. Thompson logged a fifth-place finish among 25 swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:16.02 and an 18th-place finish out of 50 swimmers in the 200 freestyle (1:59.72). Both times were the second-fastest times among NCAC swimmers this season.
