North Coast Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week – Sept. 9


Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Cole Martin, DePauw

DePauw senior Cole Martin (Noblesville, IN/Noblesville) clocked an 8k time of 25:47.2 at the Calvin Knight Invitational, finishing 24th out of 218 runners. His finish helped the Tigers secure seventh out of 24 schools competing at the event.

Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Isabelle Hoover, Wooster

Wooster sophomore Isabelle Hoover (Millersport, OH/Fairfield Union) broke the tape at the Denison-Wooster dual meet for the second straight year. Hoover crossed at 20:23.3 in the three-mile race Thursday.

Field Hockey Athlete of the Week – Meg Murphy, Earlham

Earlham sophomore Meg Murphy (Chico, CA/Chico) recorded a pair of shutouts in goal while leading the Quakers to a pair of victories last week. Murphy had five saves in a 1-0 overtime win over Wilson College on Saturday. In Sunday’s contest against Sewanee, she charted five stops in the cage while leading the Quakers to a 2-0 triumph over the Tigers. The two wins have propelled Earlham to a 3-1 record to open the 2019 season, the program’s best start since 1987 (also a 3-1 record through four games).

Offensive Football Athlete of the Week – Matt Jolliffe, Kenyon

Kenyon senior tight end Matt Jolliffe (Warren, MI/Cousino) led the Lords’ receiving corp with a career-high eight catches for 155 yards and one touchdown as the Lords snapped their 26-game losing streak during a 32-31 double-overtime win at Catholic on Saturday. 

Defensive Football Athlete of the Week – Luke Buck, Oberlin

Oberlin junior linebacker Luke Buck (Collins, OH/Western Reserve) led a stout Yeomen defense that allowed a conference-low three points last week against Kalalmazoo. Buck finished with a team-high eight tackles while also factoring in on two of the Yeomen’s four takeaways as he had an interception and also forced and recovered a fumble late in the game.

Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week – Nick Burris, DePauw

DePauw senior Nick Burris (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South) finished second at Franklin College’s Dick Park Invitational after shooting a six-under, 138. He shot a four-under, 68, in the opening round and a two-under 70 in the second to finish one stroke off of the lead. The team won the tournament with a 585 (291-294). For the season, Burris is averaging a 71.2 with two top-five finishes.

Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week – Emmy Timberlake, Denison

Denison senior Emmy Timberlake (Charlottesville, VA/ Charlottesville) earned medalist honors after playing 36 holes at the Safari Fall Invitational. Timberlake fired an even-par 72 on Saturday and followed that up with a 73 on Sunday. Her two-day total of 145 broke the program’s 36-hole scoring record of 148 held by Brynn FitzGerald. Her performance also helped Denison win its first tournament of the 2019-20 season.

Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week – Dylan Brown, Denison

Denison junior goalkeeper Dylan Brown (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) collected two victories in net  as the Big Red improved to 3-1 this season. Brown began the week with nine saves in goal against Marietta before adding another four  against Baldwin Wallace.

Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week – Ashley Smiley, Ohio Wesleyan

Ohio Wesleyan junior Ashley Smiley (Delaware, OH/Hayes) set up a game-winning goal and followed with an insurance goal in a 4-0 victory against Manchester on Wednesday. She then scored twice against Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, including what proved to be deciding goal, in a 3-1 win. She finished the week with three goals and an assist as the Battling Bishops improved to 3-1 on the season.

Women’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week – Lindsey Walker, Hiram

Hiram junior Lindsey Walker (Akron, OH/St. Vincent St. Mary) helped the Terriers to a 4-0 week, including three wins at the NCAC/MIAA Challenge. She dished out a season-high 18 kills against Alma, rounding out the week with 50 kills (3.13 per set), 44 digs (2.75 per set) and five blocks (0.31 per set).


NCAC Milestones & Records (Sept. 2 – Sept. 8)

Denison, Women’s Golf - Denison set a new 36-hole program record with a 593 to win the OWU Invitational by 53 strokes. Emmy Timberlake (Charlottesville, VA/ Charlottesville) broke the individual 36-hole scoring record (145) and Megan Wong set a new 18-hole scoring record with a 69 (-3) in the final round.

Ohio Wesleyan, Volleyball - At the NCAC/MIAA Challenge, Jordan Brandt (Vail, CO/Battle Mountain) had 13 service aces in a four-set match vs. Alma, breaking both the NCAC record of 12 set by Julie Stowers of Denison against Hiram on Oct. 27, 2004, and the OWU record of nine set by Sheila Gisbrecht against Denison on Oct. 17, 1992.
