Denison senior Phil Papaioannou (Morton Grove, IL/Maine East) was named to the Division III Academic All-America® first team as a designated hitter by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Wednesday. This is the first Academic All-America® award for Papaioannou and the 82nd recipient from Denison University since the college's first honoree in 1967. The senior is the sixth Denison baseball player to garner the prestigious honor, and the first first-team selection in program history.

Papaioannou played in 37 games for Denison in 2017.  The 2017 honorable mention All-NCAC selection hit .333 with one home run, eight doubles, 28 RBIs and 37 runs scored.  His only home run of the season came in the bottom of the ninth inning that led to a 2-1 win over Wabash on April 1.

He has played in 62 games at Denison and is a career .327 hitter.  A mathematics major with a 3.89 grade point average, Papaioannou was recently awarded a Fulbright Research Scholarship that will take him to Poland following graduation.  He was the recipient of the Larry Scheiderer Award which is given to the male varsity student-athlete with the top GPA.  He was also a three-time honoree at Denison's James T. Glerum Top-50 Student-Athlete Honors Celebration.
