DALLAS, Texas – Just two days after being named as the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Oberlin College freshman Jacob Thompson was tabbed as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Rookie of the Week.
Thompson wasted no time in getting his collegiate career started this past Saturday in a pair of 8-7 Oberlin wins over Capital. Starting at first base and hitting clean up in game one, Thompson got the day started for the Yeomen by plating their first run of the season with an RBI triple to the gap in right center.
He would follow with an RBI single in the fourth before leading off the seventh with a home run over the wall in left. He concluded his 4-for-5 performance with a single in the eighth.
In the nightcap, Thompson started on the mound and hit for himself. At the plate he went 2-for-4, which included a towering two-run home run.
The right-handed hurler worked the front five innings on the bump, allowing just one run, one hit and a walk. He retired the first seven hitters he faced before issuing a one-out walk in the third. The Corinth, Texas, native would end his start by setting down the final seven as he faced before departing after 61 pitches (34 strikes).
In addition to notching his first-career win, Thompson finished the doubleheader sweep 6-for-9 with two home runs, a triple, five RBIs, and three runs scored as he amassed 14 total bases on the day.
He and the rest of the Yeomen are back in action on Friday afternoon at Baldwin Wallace University. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
