Wooster Unanimous Pick in NCAC Baseball Poll

NCAC Baseball Poll

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) baseball coaches have selected Wooster as the favorite based on voting for the annual preseason poll.

The Fighting Scots, who have won three consecutive conference titles, received all 10 first-place votes, earning the maximum 100 points. Wabash, the winner of the 2018 NCAC Tournament, was picked second with 81 points, while Denison was just one point behind the Little Giants, earning 80 points. DePauw was slotted fourth with 55 points and Kenyon took fifth with 53 points. Allegheny (52), Wittenberg (50), Ohio Wesleyan (40), Oberlin (29) and Hiram (10) rounded out the 10-team field.

Wooster heads into this season ranked as the No. 1 team in the D3baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason polls. Senior Garrett Crum (Alliance, Ohio/Canton South) and junior Dan Harwood (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) were tabbed with preseason All-America honors from D3baseball.com after both were named All-NCAC First-Team selections a season ago. Seniors Jacob Stuursma (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Chandler Dippman (Waterville, Ohio/St. Johns Jesuit) also return to the diamond after All-NCAC first-team honors last year. Head coach Tim Pettorini, the active leader in NCAA Division III coaching wins with 1,213, announced that 2019 will be his final season at the helm of the Fighting Scots. Wooster has made 25 appearances in the NCAA Div. III Baseball Championships under Pettorini, with his squads winning the Mideast Regional and advancing to the Div. III World Series six times (1989, 1994, 1997, 2005, 2009, 2018). There, Wooster has a pair of national runner-up finishes (1997, 2009) and a third-place performance (2005) to its credit.

Wooster leads all NCAC teams with 18 championships in 34 years, which includes winning 11 of the last 17 league titles. Ohio Wesleyan (10), Allegheny (4), DePauw (1), Oberlin (1) and Wabash (1) are the other five teams to capture a title in conference history. Allegheny and Wooster shared the inaugural crown in the 1985 season.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
