Wittenberg Picked to Win NCAC Men's Golf Title

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The 2019 NCAC Men’s Golf Championship will tee off this weekend, May 3-5, at Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield, Ohio. DePauw University will serve as the host institution for the 54-hole tournament, with 18 holes being played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Wittenberg, the winners of nine-straight NCAC titles, received all eight first-place votes and totaled 64 points in the pre-championship poll voted on by the league coaches. Ohio Wesleyan, the 2018 runner-up, took second in the voting, tallying 54 points while Denison was tabbed third with 44 points. The Big Red narrowly edged Kenyon who received 43 points, good enough for fourth. Allegheny rounded out the top five with 34 points while DePauw was sixth (23), Wooster was seventh (18) and Wabash was eighth (8).

The Wittenberg Tigers head into the NCAC Men’s Golf Championship ranked fourth in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) national rankings. Denison, Kenyon and Ohio Wesleyan are also receiving votes from the GCAA but reside just outside the top 25. The Tigers cruise into the NCAC championship with five tournament victories on the season, including three in-a-row at the Hershey Cup (April 7-8), Wright State Invitational (April 14-15) and the Strimer Memorial Invitational (April 27-28). Wittenberg senior Colin Laszlo (Waipahu, HI/Punahu) and junior Ryan Mallette (Canton, OH/Central Catholic) look to contend again after finishing in the top five of last year’s conference championship event, earning All-NCAC first team accolades. Also back after earning first-team honors a year ago is Ohio Wesleyan junior Will Efkeman (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) who finished as the 2018 runner-up.
