North Coast men’s lacrosse teams kicked off the 2014 season in earnest last week with league squads posting a 6-1 record against non-conference opponents, led by 15th-ranked Denison (0-0, 2-0) topping 14th-ranked Washington & Lee, 11-9, in Lexington, Virginia, on Saturday. Conference teams continue non-conference action in the week ahead, while Wooster (0-0, 1-0) will host Denison in the first NCAC game of the season on Sunday (3/2) at 1:00 p.m.
DENISON, ranked 15th in the USILA Preseason Top 20 poll, picked up an 11-9 win over No. 14 Washington & Lee on Saturday in Lexington, Virginia. Senior attack Eddie Vita (Coronado, CA/Coronado) scored three goals and added two assists in the win, while sophomore goalie Chris Thomas (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) turned in a career-high 15 saves in the cage. The Big Red will continue their tough non-conference schedule on Wednesday when they visit eighth-ranked Roanoke.
DEPAUW opened the 2014 season at home last Saturday with a 7-4 loss against Rhodes. After trailing 5-0, the Tigers closed the gap to 5-4 in the fourth quarter before the Lynx scored two more goals midway through the final period to secure the victory. Freshman attack Sam Caravana (Granville, OH/Granville), the son of Denison head coach Mike Caravana, paced DPU in the loss with two goals.
HIRAM will open the 2014 season on Wednesday, March 5th, at home against Capital at 4:00 p.m.
KENYON got two goals from three different players en route to an 11-5 home win against Mount St. Joseph on Saturday. Junior attack Nick Lenard (Wayne, PA/Episcopal Acad.) scored three goals and dished out two assists in the win, while sophomore goalie Patrick Shevelson (Pleasanton, CA/Foothill) made 13 saves in goal for the Lords.
OBERLIN opens its 2014 season this Wednesday on the road against Mount Union at 4:00 p.m.
OHIO WESLEYAN won a pair of non-conference games last week, defeating Mount St. Joseph, 21-2, on Wednesday, before topping Otterbein, 10-5, on Saturday. Junior midfielder Kyle Foster (Madfield, MA/Avon Old Farms, CT) scored five first-half goals in OWU’s win over MSJ, while junior attack John Umbach (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) scored four goals in the Bishops’ five-goal victory over Otterbein. On the week, Umbach scored eight goals and dished out three assists for 11 total points.
WITTENBERG opened the season with a 13-7 win over Sewanee to kick off Jay Owen’s career as the Tigers’ head coach. Sophomore Andrew Fuss (New Albany, OH/New Albany) poured in three goals, tallied three assists and scooped up four groundballs, while senior Jordan Shoger (Cleveland Hts., OH/Cleveland Hts.) also netted three goals for the Tigers.
WOOSTER topped Mount Union, 10-3, in its season-opener on February 20th. Junior attack Tom Herold (Massillon, OH/Jackson) was part of five of the Fighting Scots’ scores by netting three goals and passing out two assists. He also contributed on the defensive end by picking up four groundballs.
