North Coast men’s lacrosse squads kicked off the 2016 season last week, highlighted by 11th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan (0-0, 1-0) opening the season with an 18-2 victory over Augustana. Non-conference action continues in the coming week with conference play scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 19th.

DENISON scored the first six goals of the game helping the 17th-ranked Big Red post a convincing 13-3 season-opening win at Washington and Lee last Saturday. Seniors James Meager (Worthington, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) and Blair Farinholt (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher’s School) each collected four points. Meager netted a hat trick and dished out one assist, while Farinholt had three helpers to go along with one goal. In his first-collegiate game, freshman Owen Armstrong (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) scored twice and assisted on a third goal. Senior Eric Baumgardner (Washington, DC/Gonzaga College) went 11-for-17 at the face-off X, while senior goalie Chris Thomas (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) made six saves.

DEPAUW opened the 2016 season with a 10-4 loss to Rhodes. The Tigers trailed, 4-1, at the half, but the visiting Lynx outscored DePauw, 4-0, in the third. Matthew Dauw (Canoga Park, CA/Chaminade Prep) scored two goals and assisted on a third, while Jimmy DiBiase (Berwyn, IL/Nazareth Academy) collected five ground balls.

HIRAM will open its 2016 season next Wednesday, March 2nd with a 4:00 p.m. contest versus Thiel.

KENYON will open its 2016 season this Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. contest at Capital.

OBERLIN opened the season with a 19-11 win over Olivet last weekend. Seniors Alex Wagman (Lutherville, MD/Deerfield Academy) and Nick Lobley (Port Washington, NY/Portledge School) each scored seven goals and combined for six assists in the win.

OHIO WESLEYANranked 11th in the USILA preseason poll, cruised to a 18-2 victory over Augustana in its lid-lifter last Saturday. Junior attacker Matt Maier (Summit, NJ/Summit) led the Bishops with four goals and two assists, while Marcus Dietz (Westerville, OH/St. Francis DeSales) finished with three goals and two assists. Sophomore defenseman Trent Schulte (Coronado, CA/Coronado) scored three goals, setting a school record for goals scored in a game by a long-stick player. In goal, senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, GA/Decatur) made nine saves  during the first 49-plus minutes in the Ohio Wesleyan crease.

WABASH will open its 2016 season this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Calvin.

WITTENBERG is scheduled to host Otterbein in its season-opener on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

WOOSTER broke an 8-8 tie early in the second half with an extended stretch of unanswered goals, as it scored the last three of the third quarter and the first three of the fourth to pull away from Albion, and the Fighting Scots eventually prevailed 14-10 in the season debut for both teams. Sophomore Ian Brim (Dublin, OH/Dublin Jerome) paced the Scots’ offense with seven points coming on three goals and four assists. During Wooster’s game-changing 6-0 run, he accounted for two goals and one assist.
