Eight of the nine NCAC men’s lacrosse teams were in action last week and combined for a 7-4 record against non-conference foes, led by 10th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan (0-0, 3-0) earning a pair of wins over Otterbein, 17-4, and Plattsburgh St., 17-11.
In a battle of two nationally ranked teams, NO. 15 DENISON suffered an 8-7 loss to No. 13 Roanoke last Thursday. The Big Red would bounce back with a 17-1 win over Berry (Ga.) on Sunday. Denison will face Sewanee on Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m.
DEPAUW evened its season record at 1-1 after topping Kalamazoo, 13-3, on Saturday. Matthew Dauw (Canoga Park, CA/Chaminade Prep) and Nick Woerner (Westfield, IN/Westfield) paced DePauw with two goals each, while Lewis Andrews (Silver Spring, MD/Northwood) and Dauw each added two assists. In all, nine different Tigers scored in the win.
HIRAM will open its 2016 season next Wednesday, March 2nd with a 4:00 p.m. contest versus Thiel.
KENYON opened the season with a pair of wins over Capital and Albion, an NCAA Tournament team from last season. Patrick Shevelson (Pleasanton, CA/Foothill)was instrumental in Kenyon’s win over Albion as he recorded 19 saves. It was the second-best, single-game total of his four-year career as a starter. The Lords will be on the road for their next four games.
OBERLIN suffered a heartbreaking,11-10, overtime loss to St. Mary’s (MD) as the Seahawks scored 1:07 into the extra session to escape town with the win. Senior Alex Wagman (Lutherville, MD/Deerfield Academy) capped off his hat-trick performance, tying the game with four seconds to go in regulation, while classmate Nick Lobley (Port Washington, NY/Portledge School) led the Yeomen with four goals.
OHIO WESLEYAN, ranked 10th in the most recent USILA poll, picked up a pair of non-conference victories last week. OWU defeated Otterbein, 17-4, on Wednesday, before knocking off Plattsburgh St., 17-11, on Saturday. Freshman Max Tennant (Englewood, CO/Cherry Creek) led the Bishiops on the week with eight goals, including five in the win over Otterbein.
WABASH opened its second season of varsity play against Calvin by losing 14-13 in double overtime. Steven Stark (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) scored three goals and provided three assists in his collegiate varsity debut. Austin Crosley (Indianapolis, IN/Southport) added three goals, as well.
WITTENBERG dropped its season opener, 13-12, to Otterbein last Saturday. Senior Andrew Fuss (New Albany, OH/Gahanna Lincoln) led the Tigers with three goals and three assists for six total points. The Tigers return to action Saturday when they travel to Albion.
WOOSTER opened up an 11-2 lead midway through the third quarter, then held off a furious rally by John Carroll to prevail 12-11 in the Fighting Scots’ home opener. Sam Kuhn (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) played a part in five of Wooster’s 12 goals, scoring two and assisting on three. His unassisted tally early in the fourth quarter held up as the difference maker. Kuhn was also active defensively, helping limit John Carroll to just 12-of-26 on clear attempts, and individually, he had three caused turnovers plus two groundballs.
