After being up by only one goal after the first 15 minutes of action, 5-4, No. 2 Salisbury used a seven-goal second period to pull away from No. 9 Denison recording a 19-10 victory in the 2019 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinal matchup. This was the fourth time the two teams faced off in either the quarterfinals or the semifinals since 2014 and their eighth overall meeting in the NCAA Tournament.
The Big Red would see four first period goals from four different players including Owen Armstrong (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin), Brooks Davy (Wilmington, NC/Episcopal), Peter Pittroff (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) and Chris Haimbaugh (Dublin, OH/Dublin Jerome). The Sea Gulls would then net six-consecutive goals in the second frame, before Jake Waxter (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) was able to find the back of the net for the Big Red. Salisbury connected on the final goal of the half to take a 12-5 lead.
Davy and Waxter netted one goal each in the third period, which were matched by two more goals by Salisbury. Goals from Michael Bomes (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) and Wills Hutras (Dublin, OH/Dublin Scioto) in the fourth period would not be enough to overtake the Sea Gulls.
Davy led the Big Red with three goals, while Spencer Butler (Essex Fells, NJ/Millbrook School) would notch a game-high three assists and Reeves McKenney (Roanoke, VA/Culver Academy) collected 14 saves on the night.
Denison ends the 2019 season with an 18-3 record, while Salisbury will move on to compete in the national semifinals this weekend against Cabrini.
