CLEVELAND, OH – Defending North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Champion, Denison was picked as the favorite in the 2020 NCAC men’s lacrosse preseason poll, based on balloting of the conference coaches.

The Big Red, who have won four-straight NCAC tournament titles, earned eight of the 10 first-place votes for 98 points overall, while Ohio Wesleyan finished second in the voting, earning the final two first-place votes and 92 total points. Kenyon checked in at third with 80 points, followed by Wooster (64) in fourth and Wittenberg (56) in fifth. Rounding out the field were DePauw in sixth (52), Oberlin in seventh (47), Allegheny in eighth (23), Wabash in ninth (21) and Hiram in 10th (17).

Denison heads into its first game ranked No. 8 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) NCAA Division III national rankings. The Big Red finished last season with an 18-3 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. The team returns NCAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-NCAC first-teamer, Chris Broderick (Hingham, MA/Thayer Academy), along with fellow All-NCAC first-team defenders, Richie Bartozzi (Bethesda, MD/The Heights School) and Sam Dyson (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s St. Agnes). The Big Red also bring back all-conference first-team attackman Peter Pittroff (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day), first-team short-stick defensive midfielder Michael Bomes (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) and first-team goalie Reeves McKenney (Roanoke, VA/Culver Academy).

Ohio Wesleyan leads all NCAC teams with 20 championships in 35 years. Denison, which has won at least a share of seven of the last nine league titles, follows with 18 all-time. Wittenberg has two crowns, while Kenyon and Wooster each boast one championship apiece. The NCAC has had tri-champions on three separate occasions, first in 2000 when the Big Red, Battling Bishops and Lords shared the title, then in 2004, when Denison, OWU and Wooster each had a piece of the crown, only to have it happen again in 2011 with Denison, Wittenberg and Ohio Wesleyan sharing the top spot. The conference also saw Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg share the conference crown in 2010.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, DePauw University, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
