The 2017 North Coast Softball season came to a close last weekend after DePauw dropped a tough 3-2 contest to No. 15 Otterbein in an 11-inning affair in NCAA Division III Regional play at Alma College.
DePauw found itself in an elimination contest after falling to host Alma on Friday, 9-1. The Scots scored three in the second and six in the fourth en route to the eight-run victory. The Tigers left a runner stranded in each of the first four innings before reaching the board in the fifth on an RBI single from Lauren Godden (Carmel, IN/Carmel). DePauw totaled eight hits with Liz Getz (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South), Abey Bass (Shelbyville, IN/Shelbyville) and Andi Sarkisian (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) finishing with two each.
On Saturday, DePauw battled back from a 2-0 deficit and forced extra innings, but Otterbein pushed across a run in the top of the 11th for a 3-2 win over the Tigers. After the Cardinals plated runs in the second and fourth, Godden tied the game in the sixth with a two-run double that nearly left the park to eventually forced extra innings.
The Tigers had runners on third in both the seventh and eighth innings with less than two outs, but couldn’t push across the game winner.
Emma Baldwin (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park River Forest) suffered the loss and finished the season at 8-9 despite allowing just four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in eight innings.
DePauw finished the year with a record of 23-21, including the program’s third NCAC Tournament championship and a second-place finish in the regular season after posting a conference record of 13-3.
