The North Coast softball season is officially underway as six of the league’s nine teams have opened play and three more will open the year this week. Spring break trips continue this week as Ohio Wesleyan (0-0) and Wooster (0-0) travel to Florida and Denison (0-0) travels to Kentucky.

ALLEGHENY opened its season with a 3-1 record at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Bash. After falling to New Paltz in their opener, the Gators defeated Potsdam, 4-2, Rhode Island, 15-14, and St. Joe’s - Brooklyn, 8-0. Offensively, Samantha Valera (Chicago, IL/Lane Technical) had six hits and seven runs. Jessica Zavolta (Level Green PA/Penn-Trafford) had a team-high eight RBI, including a three-run homerun. Kelly Lafferty (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond River) had six hits, five runs and four RBI. Baylee Tarnowski (Dunkirk, NY/Fredonia) had two wins on the mound with an ERA of 1.08, allowing just seven hits a two earned runs.

DENISON will open the 2018 season on Saturday, March 17th versus Adrian

DEPAUW was idle last week.

HIRAM opened up the 2018 season at the Tucson Invitational from March 5th-9th. The Terriers went 4-6 on the trip, posting wins over Husson, 9-8, Northland, 6-2, Fontbonne, 12-7, and Rockford, 17-6. Kaitlyn Hager (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate High School) made her collegiate debut last week, leading the Terriers with 14 runs and 18 hits, including two home runs.

KENYON went 6-4 last week as they took part in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers and Naples, Florida. Grace Finn (Escondido, CA/Escondido) led the Ladies’ offense in batting average and slugging percentage last week. Nine of her 17 hits were extra-base hits. Finn’s best performance came against SUNY Canton when she went 3-for-3 with a double and triple and three RBI. Kenyon, 10-4 overall this year, will close its annual trip to the Sunshine State on March 12 with games against Swarthmore and the College of Brockport.

OBERLIN opened its 2018 campaign with a sweep at W&J Sunday afternoon. The Yeowomen came from behind to defeat the Presidents 6-4 in game one and cruised to a 17-0 five-inning victory in game two. As a team the Yeowomen batted .424 (25-59) on the day. First-year catcher Jackie Bednar (Prospect Heights, IL/John Hersey) highlighted the offense attack as she went four-for-four with five RBI. Inside the circle, Bednar’s classmate Emily Tucci (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) earned her first save and win in her first two collegiate outings. She pitched 4.2 innings, allowed zero runs and one hit, while striking out nine batters. Oberlin heads on its 12-game spring break trip starting next Saturday.

OHIO WESLEYAN will open the 2018 season on Monday, March 12th, on its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida against Anderson.

WITTENBERG wrapped up its spring break trip with a 5-7 record against tough competition, including a 4-2 record last week. Elise Freeland (Marysville, OH/Marysville) led the Tigers with a .432 batting average with 16 hits, nine runs scored, three RBI and two extra base hits.

WOOSTER will open the 2018 season on Monday, March 12th, on its spring break trip in Kissimmee, Florida against Centenary at 1:30 p.m.
