North Coast softball squads continued to battle weather last week with a number of contests postponed or rescheduled. There are nine NCAC doubleheaders scheduled this week, with four each on Tuesday and Saturday and one Sunday.
ALLEGHENY swept Oberlin in its lone action of the week, picking up the wins 9-2 and 8-2. Kala Mahen (Mercer, PA/Lakeview) had both wins on the mound with a combined 19 strikeouts. Hayley Behr (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) had four hits in the two games. Kelly Lafferty (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond River) had two hits and three RBI in the opener. Jessica Zavolta (Level Green, PA/Penn Trafford) hit a solo homerun in game one.
DENISON went 5-1 last week, including a 4-0 record over NCAC opponents Kenyon and Oberlin. In the 12-0 win in game one at Oberlin, the Big Red set a new varsity record with five home runs in a single game, including two from junior Laura Bagan (Winnetka, IL/New Trier). Bagan finished the week batting .353 with four home runs and eight RBI. Leading the way for Denison was senior Lauren Secaras (Winnetka, IL/New Trier) who batted .550 on the week with three home runs, seven RBI and 23 total bases.
DEPAUW has won six of its last seven after winning two of three at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament. Jordyn Fera (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) led the Tigers at the plate, batting .800 (8-10) with a 1.500 slugging percentage with two homers. The Tigers batted .382 for the week and slugged .618.
HIRAM went 1-2 last week, which included picking up its eighth win of the season (matching last year’s win total). In the 4-2 victory over Wooster, the Terriers received a career-high three RBI from freshman Mariah Sheffield (Long Beach, CA/Lakewood) to secure the win. First-year outfield Kaitlyn Hager (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate High School) increased her career-opening hitting streak to 21 games with a hit in all three outings.
KENYON played a couple of NCAC doubleheaders last week and went 1-3. The Ladies were swept Thursday at Denison by scores of 7-1 and 12-4. Saturday, they returned home to split with Wooster, losing game one 5-1 and winning game two 8-3. Freshman Grace Finn (Escondido, CA/Escondido) continued to pace the Kenyon offense. In those four games, she went 3-for-8 with three walks, four runs, four stolen bases and an RBI.
OBERLIN dropped both ends a doubleheader against Allegheny and Denison. The Yeowomen fell 9-2 and 8-2 to the Gators, and were defeated 12-0 and 5-3 by the Big Red. Sophomore Alexis Dill (Avon, OH/Avon) hit .500 (5-for-10) with a double to lead Oberlin at the plate. In the second game against the Big Red, the Yeowomen led 2-0 for much of the way, but couldn’t make it stand up as Denison rallied late for the win.
OHIO WESLEYAN was idle last week due to inclement weather.
WITTENBERG went 1-3 last week in non-conference action, with the lone victory coming against Ill. Wesleyan. In the win, senior Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) hurled her second career no-hitter with five strikeouts.
WOOSTER split NCAC doubleheaders last week with Hiram and Kenyon. In the two wins, sophomore Marina Roski (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch) led the Scots with six hits, two runs and two RBI.
