Gustavas Adolphus College earned a 5-3 win over the Kenyon Ladies tennis team on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament. The loss ends Kenyon's season with a 13-10 overall mark.
Competition was pretty close in two of three doubles flights. At No. 1, things were tied at 5-5 before Michaela Schulz and Ally Baker won three straight games for Gustavas. The Gusties then went up 2-0 with an 8-6 win at the third flight from Katie Aney and Lilly Hartman.
The Ladies' lone doubles point came from Grace Winslow and Maggie Sweeney. Kenyon's duo got up 5-0 before eventually prevailing 8-4 over Briana Hartmann and Calleigh Carlson.
In singles, Sweeney tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Baker. But the Gusties would win the next two matches. Aney earned a straight sets victory at No. 4 before Hartman won 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 at No. 6. Hartman was down 5-2 in the first before getting in gear and winning.
Diana Aboubakare inched the Ladies closer at the top flight. In a highly competitive match against Schulz, the junior was able to prevail in the third by a 6-2 count.
Gustavas then clinched the match at the third spot. Hartmann fell in the first set to Murray, but came back to win the next two.
