Three NCAC volleyball teams remain undefeated in league play to start the 2013 season, including DePauw (4-0, 17-1), Hiram (3-0, 11-5) and Wittenbeg (4-0, 13-6); however, that tie will be partially broken tonight (10/8) as Wittenberg travels to DePauw for a 7:00 p.m. match. League action also resumes with three matches on the schedule for Wednesday (10/9).

ALLEGHENY dropped two conference matches last week, falling to Oberlin, 3-1, on Wednesday and suffering a 3-0 loss against Denison on Saturday. Sophomore Taylor Samuel (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) racked up 13 digs, 11 kills and seven service aces against Oberlin, while classmate Sarah Swartz (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) led the Gators with seven kills against DU.

DENISON improved to 3-1 in NCAC play and 14-5 overall after earning a pair of league wins last week against Wooster, 3-1, and Allegheny, 3-0. The win over the Gators marked DU’s seventh shutout victory of the year and the fourth in the last seven matches. Junior libero Emily Marguerite (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) averaged 9.71 digs per set last week after totaling 68 digs in seven total sets. Marguerite currently leads all of NCAA Division III in digs per set with a 7.33 average, while the Big Red also rank in the top-10 nationally for digs with 20.07 per set.

DEPAUW extended its winning streak to 17 with a pair of conference wins last week against Ohio Wesleyan, 3-0, and Kenyon, 3-0. Junior middle hitter Mary Kate Etling (Terre Haute, IN/North) had an impressive week for the Tigers with 22 kills, a .579 hitting percentage, five block assists and two digs.

HIRAM opened play last week with a 3-0 loss against Mt. Union, but bounced back on Saturday with a 3-0 league victory over Wooster.

KENYON dropped a pair of matches against two of the league’s elite squads last week. The Ladies fell against 12th-ranked Wittenberg, 3-0, on Tuesday and then suffered a 3-1 defeat against DePauw on Saturday. Senior Sierra DeLeon (Upper Marlboro, MD/Maret) led the Ladies with 24 kills in the two matches combined.

OBERLIN turned in a perfect 3-0 week to run its current winning streak to four matches in a row. The Yeowomen opened the week with a 3-1 league victory over Allegheny on Wednesday and then posted a pair of 3-0 victories over PSU-Greater Allegheny and PSU-Fayette on Saturday. In the victory over Allegheny, junior Christine Antonsen (Potomac, MD/Poolesville) had the best match of her collegiate career with career-highs in kills (17) and service aces (5). On the week, Antonsen finished with 35 kills, 12 service aces, 11 digs and three block assists in 10 total sets.

OHIO WESLEYAN was upended by DePauw, 3-0, in its only action last week. Sophomore middle hitter Meigan Day (Port Clinton, OH/Port Clinton) led the Battling Bishops with 10 kills in the loss.

WITTENBERG took down Kenyon, 3-0, in its only match last week. Following a loss against Juniata on September 13th, the Tigers have now won nine-straight matches with each of the last eight wins coming in straight sets. Senior middle hitter Andrea Behling (Columbus, IN/North) was the offensive leader against the Ladies as she smacked 12 kills with a .550 hitting percentage.

WOOSTER suffered a pair of league losses last week against Denison, 3-1, and Hiram, 3-0. Senior outside hitter Paige Parker (Springfield, OH/West-Liberty Salem) became the seventh player in school history to record 1,000 career kills, achieving the milestone early in the match against DU. With 16 kills on the week, she raised her career total to 1,014.
