The league portion of the 2013 North Coast Volleyball schedule opens this week with Wittenberg (0-0, 4-5) hosting Oberlin (0-0, 4-7) on Friday night, followed by four more matches on Saturday afternoon. Allegheny (0-0, 5-7) hosts Ohio Wesleyan (0-0, 8-5), Kenyon (0-0, 0-9) travels to Hiram (0-0, 7-4), Oberlin visits DePauw (0-0, 9-1) and Wittenberg entertains Wooster (0-0, 4-9).

ALLEGHENY went 1-3 at its own Gator Invitational, earning a 3-0 victory over Thiel before dropping three straight to Albion, 3-2, Bluffton, 3-1, and Buffalo St., 3-0. Sophomore Julia Weeks (McLean, VA/Langley) was named to the All-Tournament team after she racked up 45 kills, 27 digs, seven set assists, four service aces and three blocks (1 solo, 2 asst.) in 15 total sets on the weekend.

DENISON defeated John Carroll, 3-0, in its only action last week. Sophomore Elena Lein (Athens, OH/Athens) and freshman Rachele Lock (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius) paced DU in the victory with eight kills a piece.

DEPAUW extended its current winning streak to nine-straight after winning four matches against Marietta, 3-1, Olivet, 3-0, Trine, 3-0, and Rose-Hulman, 3-1, at its own DPU Tigers Invitational. Junior middle hitter Mary Kate Etling (Terre Haute, IN/North) was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while senior Kelly Doyle (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) was also named to the All-Tournament team. In the four matches combined, Etling racked up 36 kills, 12 block assists and nine digs in 14 total sets.

HIRAM opened the week with a 3-0 loss against Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, before defeating Defiance, 3-2, and losing to Baldwin Wallace again by a 3-2 margin on Saturday. Freshman Marissa Jay (Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan) led the Terries on the week with 56 kills, 10 digs, 10 block assists and two service aces in 13 total sets.

KENYON dropped a 3-1 decision against Muskingum in its only match last week. Senior Sierra DeLeon (Upper Marlboro, MD/Maret) led the Ladies with 20 kills in the loss.

OBERLIN split a pair of matches at its own tri-match, dropping a 3-1 contest against Augustana on Friday and defeating La Roche, 3-0, on Saturday. Freshman Hannah Tyburski (Lakewood, OH/Lakewood) led the Yeowomen offensively on the weekend after recording 22 kills in both matches combined.

OHIO WESLEYAN dropped back-to-back matches to open the week against Capital, 3-1, and Adrian, 3-1, before reeling off three straight victories over Manchester, 3-0, Anderson, 3-1, and Earlham, 3-0, at the Manchester Invitational in Indiana. Senior middle hitter Tamra Londot (Utica, OH/Utica), who was named to the Manchester Invitational All-Tournament team, finished the week with 47 kills, 12 blocks (3 solo, 9 asst.) and 10 digs in 18 total sets.

WITTENBERG, ranked 10th in the nation on the AVCA Top 25, posted a 2-1 record at its annual Fall Classic, opening the event with a 3-0 loss against 16th-ranked Juniata on Friday, before winning a pair of matches against eighth-ranked Otterbein, 3-1, and Mt. St. Joseph, 3-0, on Saturday. Junior setter Meghan Vodopich (Canton, OH/Massillon Perry) dished out 85 assists, including 35 against Otterbein, and struck for 15 kills in 10 total sets at the Fall Classic.

WOOSTER went 1-3 at the Mount Union Purple Raider Classic, earning its lone victory against Kalamazoo, 3-2, on Saturday. The Fighting Scots were led on the weekend by senior outside hitter Paige Parker (Springfield, OH/West Liberty-Salem) who racked up 36 digs, 31 kills, two set assists, two service aces and one block assist in 14 total sets.
