Wittenberg (29-4) capped its season with a dramatic 3-2 loss to Hope in the regional finals of the 2014 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, November 15.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Flying Dutch, 25-16, 25-19, but Hope turned the tables and won the next three sets, 25-16, 25-23, 15-13 to advance to the Elite Eight. Juniors Kara Seidenstricker (London, OH/Jonathan Alder) and Kristina Fulz (Batavie, OH/Glen Este) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Seidenstricker hit at a .229 clip in the final with 16 kills. She also added 20 digs, three blocks and four assists. Fulz contributed 13 kills (.273 hitting percentage) and 12 digs with two blocks and a service ace to her credit. Senior Meghan Vodopich (Canton, OH/Massillon Perry) led the Tigers with 28 assists.
Wittenberg, which made its fifth consecutive appearance in the Regional Championship match, closes out the 2014 campaign with a 29-4 record.
Second-Round Recaps (11/14)
Wittenberg (29-3) advanced to the regional finals of the 2014 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament following a 3-1 triumph over Mount Union, while DePauw (27-11) saw its 2014 come to a close with a 3-0 loss against Carthage in the regional semifinals on Friday night.
The Wittenberg Tigers topped the Purple Raiders for the second time this season to set up a regional final match against Hope (30-2) at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night (11/15) at Pam Evans Smith Arena in Springfield. Sophomore middle hitter Kendall Farmer (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) paced the Tigers' offensive unit with 11 kills and a .474 hitting percentage, while junior Kristina Fultz (Batavia, OH/Glen Este) scooped up a match-high 23 digs on the defensive side of the ball.
DePauw challenged host Carthage early and led 14-8 in the first set, but the Lady Reds scored five straight and 12 of the next 13 poins to take a 20-15 lead en route the the second-round victory over the Tigers at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Junior setter Faith Rowles (Chesterfield, MO/Villa Duchesne) handed out 27 set assists in her final match of the season, while sophomore middle hitter Elisabeth Wilson (Carterville, IL/Carterville) led the offensive attack with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
First-Round Recaps (11/13)
DePauw (27-10) and Wittenberg (28-3) both logged opening-round victories on Thursday night to open play in the 2014 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament.
The DPU Tigers opened the night with a straight-set victory over Chicago at the Carthage College Regional in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Junior outside hitter Lauren Falotico (Arlington Hts., IL/St. Viator) led the Tigers with 10 kills in the match, while junior libero Keely McGrath (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) and sophomore defensive specialist Rachael Lenderman (Hinsdale, IL/Central) each contributed 15 digs for the defensive units. DePauw will now take on Carthage (35-3) in the second round tomorrow night (11/14) at 8:00 p.m. in Wisconsin.
Wittenberg, ranked fourth in the nation on the final AVCA national poll of the regular season, also cruised to a straight-set victory over Cabrini in the opening round at Pam Evans Smith Arena in Springfield, Ohio. Junior Kara Seidenstricker (London, OH/Jonathan Alder), the 2014 NCAC Player of the Year, led the Tigers with 12 kills, while classmate Meghan Vodopich (Canton, OH/Massillon Perry) dished out 21 assists and scooped up 10 digs in the win. Wittenberg will now entertain Mount Union (29-5) in the second round tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. in Springfield.
