North Coast volleyball squads continued their dominance of
non-conference opponents last week with No. 22 DePauw (0-0,
10-1) and Ohio Wesleyan (0-0, 10-2) both going 4-0 at weekend
tournaments, while No. 9 Wittenberg (0-0, 7-3) scored a
straight-set victory over No. 1 Calvin at its own Fall Classic.
League play will begin this Saturday with four matches on the
slate, highlighted by Ohio Wesleyan hosting Allegheny (0-0, 10-2)
at 1:00 p.m. in Delaware.
ALLEGHENY posted a perfect 4-0 record at its own Gators Invitational, collecting wins over Thiel, Pitt.-Greensburg, Mt. Aloysius and Manhattanville. Senior libero Catherine Kasianowicz (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Acad.) and junior outside hitter Taylor Samuel (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Kasianowicz finished the weekend with 69 digs and nine service aces, while Samuel collected 47 kills and a .300 attack percentage.
DENISON opened play last week with a 3-1 loss against John Carroll on Wednesday, but the Big Red bounced back and went 3-1 over the weekend at the Manchester Invitational. After dropping a 3-0 non-conference match against Ohio Wesleyan to open play, DU reeled off three-straight wins over Manchester, 3-1, Wilmington, 3-0, and Albion, 3-0. Senior libero Emily Marguerite (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) was named to the All-Tournament Team after collecting 73 digs and nine service aces in the four matches combined.
DEPAUW, ranked 22nd in the most recent AVCA national poll, improved to 10-1 on the season and extended its winning streak to nine-straight after winning all four matches at its own Tigers Invitational, including a 3-0 triumph over No. 25 Millikin on Saturday. Sophomore middle hitter Elisabeth Wilson (Carterville, IL/Carterville) was named to the All-Tournament Team after collecting 43 kills and a .345 attack percentage in 13 total sets over the weekend. Wilson was joined on the All-Tournament Team by junior outside hitter Lauren Falotico (Arlington Hts., IL/St. Viator).
HIRAM pushed its record to 10-1 on the season with three straight-set wins against PSU-Behrend, Hilbert and Marietta. Junior Lindsay Brewer (Barberton, OH/Manchester) led the squad with 15 kills against PSU-Behrend, while sophomore Marissa Jay (Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan) paced the Terriers with 22 total kills in Saturday’s tri-match against Hilbert and Marietta.
KENYON dropped three matches over the weekend at the JCU Invitational, falling to Case, 3-1, MSJ, 3-1, and JCU, 3-0. Freshman Lauren Kerr (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto Platinum) was named to the All-Tournament Team after collecting 21 kills and eight blocks (1 solo, 7 asst.) in 11 total sets.
OBERLIN went 1-3 over the weekend at the Wooster Kilt Classic. The Yeowomen fell twice on Friday against Wooster, 3-1, and Bluffton, 3-0, before splitting a pair of matches on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Franciscan and a 3-1 setback against Muskingum. Freshman middle hitter Dana Thomas (Cincinnati, OH/Summit Country Day) did collect All-Tournament Team honors after registering 20 kills, eight digs, 10 blocks and two service aces in the four matches combined.
OHIO WESLEYAN continued its early season success by posting a perfect 4-0 record over the weekend in Indiana to earn the championship at the Manchester Invitational. The Battling Bishops won 12-of-13 sets at the event to collect wins over Denison, 3-0, Wilmington, 3-1, Albion, 3-0, and Manchester, 3-0. Sophomore setter Shannon Schlater (Englewood, OH/Northmont) was named the Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by freshman outside hitter Iris Anderson (Elk Grove, CA/Christian Brothers). In four matches at Manchester, Schlater dished out 150 set assists to go along with 33 digs, 12 kills and four total blocks.
WITTENBERG, ranked ninth in the most recent AVCA national poll, wrapped up its annual Fall Classic with a 3-1 record, which included a 3-0 upset over defending national champion and top-ranked Calvin. Junior Kara Seidenstricker (London, OH/Jonathan Alder) shined for the Tigers by registering a .356 hitting percentage over the four matches combined, including a clip of .381 against Calvin and .417 against Ohio Northern. In 16 total sets over the weekend, Seidenstricker tallied 64 kills, 49 digs, nine blocks, seven service aces and five set assists.
WOOSTER finished its own Kilt Classic with a 3-1 record, topping Oberlin, 3-1, Franciscan, 3-0, and Kalamazoo, 3-0, while suffering its only loss against Muskingum, 3-0. Senior libero Rachel Sell (Hanoverton, OH/United) was named to the All-Tournament Team as she led the Fighting Scots with 50 digs and six service aces in 13 total sets.
