North Coast volleyball teams kicked off the league portion of
the 2014 schedule last week with No. 19 DePauw (1-0, 12-1), Hiram
(1-0, 12-1), Ohio Wesleyan (1-0, 11-3) and No. 8 Wittenberg (1-0,
8-3) all picking up victories. The conference slate continues in
the week ahead with one match on Wednesday, two on Saturday and one
ALLEGHENY dropped a pair of matches last week, including a 3-0 decision against Ohio Wesleyan in its NCAC-opener on Saturday. Junior Taylor Samuel (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) led the Gators with 17 kills in a 3-1 loss against Grove City on Tuesday, while senior Catherine Kasianowicz (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Acad.) collected 11 digs against OWU.
DENISON went 1-2 in three road matches last week, falling to Otterbein, 3-1, on Thursday, before splitting a pair of matches in Marietta on Saturday. The Big Red knocked off Thiel in straight sets, but did suffer a 3-1 loss against the host Pioneers. Sophomore Rachele Lock (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius) and freshman Leah Reinfranck (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) paced the DU offense on the week with 38 and 30 kills, respectively, while senior libero Emily Marguerite (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) amassed 83 digs in 11 total sets.
DEPAUW, ranked 19th in the most recent AVCA national poll, improved to 12-1 on the year and extended its winning streak to 11-straight with a pair of straight-set victories on Saturday against Oberlin and Manchester. In the two road victories, the Tigers averaged 13.3 kills per set and collected a .296 hitting percentage.
HIRAM posted a pair of 3-1 victories on Saturday against Kenyon and Otterbein in Gambier, Ohio. Junior Lindsay Brewer (Barberton, OH/Manchester) led the Terriers’ offensive unit on the day, combining for 43 kills and an impressive .526 hitting percentage.
KENYON opened its home schedule on Saturday with a pair of losses against Hiram, 3-1, and Otterbein, 3-2. Freshman setter Jensen Shurbert (Santa Cruz, CA/Pacific Collegiate) provided versatility on the court for the Ladies as she racked up 28 set assists, 12 digs, 11 kills, four service aces and two blocks in nine total sets on the day.
OBERLIN combined to go 0-3 on the week, falling to NCAA Div. II member Ursuline, 3-0, on Wednesday, before dropping a pair of matches on Saturday against 19th-ranked DePauw, 3-0, and Manchester, 3-1.
OHIO WESLEYAN suffered a 3-2 setback on Tuesday against Capital, but the Battling Bishops rebounded to post a 3-0 league win over Allegheny on Saturday. Freshmen Iris Anderson (Elk Grove, CA/Christian Brothers) and Brianna La Croix (Woodland Hills, CA/Sierra Canyon) led OWU against Capital with 18 and 16 kills, respectively. Le Croix then posted a season-best 20-kill performance on Saturday against the Gators.
WITTENBERG, ranked eighth in the most recent AVCA national poll, opened conference play on Saturday with a straight-set win over Wooster. Junior Bryanna Jay (Girard, OH/Girard) smashed seven kills and posted a .667 hitting percentage in the match, while sophomore Maria Froendhoff (Ft. Thomas, KY/Newport Central Catholic) led the Tigers’ defensive unit with 16 digs.
WOOSTER suffered a 3-1 non-conference decision against Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, before being swept by No. 8 Wittenberg in league action on Saturday. Sophomore middle hitter Lydia Webster (Fredericktown, OH/Fredericktown) combined for a team-high 19 kills on the week.
