Wittenberg (29-3) capped off its magical 2015 season as the national runners-up following a 3-0 loss against Cal Lutheran in the championship match of the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championships on Saturday night at Van Noord Arena on the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Senior right-side hitter Kara Seidenstricker (London, OH/Jonathan Alder) put a bow on her outstanding career by being named to the All-Tournament team after finishing the three-day event with 17 kills, 39 digs and six service aces. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by junior outside hitter Camila Quinones (Sunbury, OH/Worthington Christian) who compiled 21 kills and nine total blocks in Michigan.
The Tigers advanced to the national championship match with a 3-0 triumph over Clarkson (30-9) in the quarterfinals on Thursday and a 3-1 victory over Hendrix (31-9) in the semifinals on Friday. Cal Lutheran claimed its first national title with a 3-1 victory over Bowdoin in the quarterfinals and a 3-2 win over Carthage in the national semifinals.
The NCAA runner-up finish was the second by a Wittenberg team in six months, coming on the heels of the women’s golf team’s performance at the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships. Wittenberg has a total of eight runner-up finishes in its rich athletics history - four in men’s basketball, two in football and one each in women’s golf and women’s volleyball. Wittenberg teams have won five NCAA Tournament titles - two in football, two in men’s basketball and the 2011 women’s volleyball championship.
