The 2016 NCAC Volleyball season came to a close last weekend as both DePauw (25-6) and Wittenberg (22-6) were eliminated from the regional semifinals at the NCAA Division III Calvin College Regional Tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In the quarterfinal round on November 10th, Wittenberg cruised to a 3-0 win over Bethany, while DePauw bounced Carnegie Mellon by a 3-1 margin. The tables turned on the two squads the next day in the semifinal round as DePauw suffered a 3-0 loss against Calvin and Wittenberg dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision against Millikin. After falling behind Millikin, 2-0, the Tigers fought back to even the match at 2-2, but the Big Blue eliminated Wittenberg from the regional with a 19-17 victory in the fifth and final set.
Calvin won the regional tournament over Millikin by a 3-1 margin to advance to the national quarterfinals next weekend in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Following the three-day event, DePauw junior setter Keegan Kollias (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) and Wittenberg junior outside hitter Maddie Fischer (Minerva, OH/Minerva) were both named to the all-tournament team. Kollias handed out 72 total assists and scooped up 35 digs in the two regional matches combined, while Fischer finished the weekend with 29 kills and just six hitting errors in 73 total attempts for a .315 hitting percentage.
