The Wittenberg Tigers (27-3) capped their 2017 campaign as national runners-up after dropping a 3-0 decision to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the final match of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships on Saturday evening (11/18) at Van Noord Arena on the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The loss snapped the Tigers' seven-match winning streak, including five straight postseason wins that had the Tigers on the brink of their second national title in six seasons.
Senior Maddie Fischer (Minerva, OH/Minerva) and sophomore Aubrey Cox (Tipp City, OH/Tippecanoe) once again led the Tigers. Fischer, named to the all-tournament team, led the way with 13 kills in her final performance as a Tiger to go along with five digs. Cox posted nine kills against 17 attempts and three errors for a team-high .353 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Karen Wildemann (Columbus, IN/North) was also honored as a member of the all-tournament team; dished out 28 set assists and the Tigers’ lone service ace in the championship match.
CMS was credited with 48 total kills and committed just 16 errors compared to Wittenberg who finished with 37 kills and 21 errors. The Athenas took advantage of sideout opportunities converting on 62% (38-61), while the Tigers managed just 49% (36-73) of sideout chances.
