Hiram outside hitter Marissa Jay (Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan) has been named the Player of the Year and DePauw senior Rachael Lenderman (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central) was named the Libero of the Year to highlight the 2016 All-North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball selections.
Jay, who was named the NCAC Newcomer of the Year in 2013, makes her third appearance on an All-NCAC team and her second showing on the top squad since also collecting the honor in her freshman season. In 26 total regular season matches, Jay led the NCAC with 459 kills, while also finishing in the top-10 in both aces (42 - 6th) and digs (317 - 10th). In the eight regular season conference matches, she posted a stat line of 134 kills, 95 digs and 9 aces. In addition, Jay posted 18 double-double performances on the year, which included a string of eight-straight double-doubles in matches played between October 1-26. Her most impressive showing during that stretch was a 22 kill, 25-dig effort in a 3-1 win over Geneva on October 6th.
Ohio Wesleyan junior outside hitter Iris Anderson (Elk Grove, CA/Christian Brothers) is the only player on the 2016 first team that was also named to the top squad a year ago. Anderson also collected second-team honors in 2014. Kenyon sophomore outside hitter Delaney Swanson (Sonoma, CA/Sonoma Valley) elevated to the top team from the 2015 second team, while Denison junior middle hitter Leah Reinfranck (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) made the lead to the first team from the honorable mention squad last fall. Wooster senior Lydia Webster (Fredericktown, OH/Fredericktown) landed on the top team this year after earning honorable-mention accolades in 2014, while the Wittenberg duo of junior Maddie Fischer (Minerva, OH/Minerva) and freshman Aubrey Cox (Tips City, OH/Tippecanoe) both make their All-NCAC debut on the first team this year.
Lenderman, who earned her first All-NCAC citation on the second team this year, was named the 2016 NCAC Libero of the Year finishing the regular season with 459 digs in 89 total sets for an average of 5.16 digs per set. She posted 20-plus digs on nine different occasions this year, which included a season-best 33 digs against Hanover on September 3rd. She also scooped up 141 digs in the eight conference matches during the regular season, highlighted by a 27-dig performance in a 3-1 win over Denison on October 22nd.
Wittenberg’s Cox was named the 2016 NCAC Newcomer of the Year after finishing the regular season with the top hitting percentage in the NCAC. In 23 total regular season matches, she accumulated 135 kills and committed just 36 hitting errors for an amazing .360 hitting percentage. She was also a presence at the net defensively for the Tigers as she set down 66 total blocks (10 solo, 56 asst.), which included a pair of seven block performances in league wins over Denison and Wooster.
Allegheny head coach Bridget Sheehan was unanimously voted by the league coaches as the 2016 NCAC Coach of the Year. This is Sheehan’s third NCAC Coach of the Year honor. A fixture of NCAC Volleyball for over three decades, she also earned the award in 1987 and 1990. Her 635 career wins make her the 19th winningest coach in NCAA history. Sheehan has taken a leave of absence from the bench this season as she battles cancer.
