NCAA Announces 2017 XC National Qualifiers

All nine North Coast cross country teams continued their seasons on Saturday (11/11) at the NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional at Liberty Park in Powell, Ohio with Ohio Wesleyan serving as the host institution. 

The 2017 NCAA Division III Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships will now be contested next Saturday, November 18th at the North Farm Facility in Elsah, Illinois.

On the men’s side, DePauw finished second to lead all NCAC teams at the Great Lakes Regional with 110 points, earning an automatic bid into the 2017 NCAA Championship field. The Tigers will be making their first team appearance at the National Meet since 2004.

Allegheny followed the DePauw men in the team standings in ninth (250), Wabash in 11th (340), Ohio Wesleyan in 15th (473), Wooster in 17th (490), Denison in 20th (582), Kenyon in 25th (715), Oberlin in 26th (727) and Wittenberg in 27th (737)

NCAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year, Wabash junior Dominic Patacsil (West Lafayette, IN/West Lafayette), led all conference participants with an 8k time of 25:11.7 to finish second overall in the 242-runner field.

In total, seven NCAC men’s runners earned All-Region honors by finishing in the top-35, with two of those runners joining Patacsil in the top-10, including DePauw senior Polo Burgete (Distrito Federal, Mexico/Culver Acad.) in fifth (25:32.0) and DePauw junior Paul Christian (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West) in eighth (25:40.7). Others receiving All-Region accolades included, Allegheny senior John Hughes (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) in 12th (25:47.8), Allegheny junior Matt Svetz (Meadville, PA/Meadville) in 14th (25:56.5), Wittenberg junior Charles Rodeheffer (Delaware, OH/Olentangy) in 19th (26:04.4), DePauw junior Zach Batt (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) in 22nd (26:09.8) and Allegheny senior Carter Smith (Cranberry Twp., PA/Eden Christian Acad.) in 34th (26:24.7).

On the women’s side, Allegheny earned the top NCAC team finish with a third-place showing. Each of the Gators’ top-five runners finished in the top-45, as the team finished with a team score of 115, led by junior Sarah Hevener (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) finishing ninth overall with a 6k time of 22:37.4.  

The Allegheny women were followed in the team standings by Oberlin in fifth (178), Kenyon in 10th (279), Ohio Wesleyan in 13th (378), DePauw in 16th (421), Denison in 22nd (557) and Wooster in 24th (592).

NCAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year, Oberlin junior Linnea Halsten (Madison, WI/East), not only led all conference runners at the regional meet, but also topped the 293-runner field with a time of 21:37.2 to earn the 2017 Great Lakes Regional Individual title.

In all, six NCAC runners cracked the top-35 to earn All-Region honors including Oberlin sophomore Marija Crook (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill) who joined Halsten and Hevener in the top-10 checking in at 10th (22:49.1). Allegheny senior Olivia Mamula (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) finished 14th (22:52.3), Allegheny junior Emily Forner (Beaver, PA/Beaver Area) finished 18th (22:57.6) and Oberlin sophomore Oona Jung-Beeman (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) finished 35th to round out the NCAC All-Region honorees.

In addition to the DePauw men’s team, the Allegheny women’s squad earned one of the 16 available at-large invitations into this weekend’s national meet. Five individual runners from NCAC schools also posted qualifying standards for the national race, including Patacsil, Hughes, and Svetz on the men’s side, along with Halsten and Crook on the women’s side.
