Denison Men's Lacrosse Falls in NCAA Third Round

The No. 19 Denison men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-4 loss Saturday evening to No. 6 York in the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Big Red finish the 2022 season at 16-5 overall, while the Spartans (19-2) advance to the quarterfinal round scheduled for Saturday, May 21, and will take on the winner of the Wesleyan (CT) vs. Christopher Newport third round game.

York netted the first goal of the game, while Camden Bowdy (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) tied the game at 1-1 thanks to a feed from Luke Fisher (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephens & St. Agnes). The Spartans would then take the lead back, 2-1, at the 8:24 mark in the first and never let up, scoring another 13 goals over the next 40 minutes to go up 15-1. Denison would score three straight goals in the fourth, one from Clyde Bresnahan (Atlanta, GA/The Lovett School) at the 12:33 mark and two back-to-back goals from Ethan Tyack (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) at 11:07 and 9:06, while Fisher assisted on Tyack’s second goal. York would score the final goal of the game with 7:48 remaining to earn the third-round victory.

Denison’s Archer Darrach (Radnor, PA/Radnor) made 14 saves between the pipes for the Big Red.

The 2022 DIII men's lacrosse quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, May 21-22, while the championship is set for Sunday, May 29, at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.

SECOND ROUND:

The Denison men's lacrosse team captured a 14-13 second-round victory in the 2022 NCAA Division III tournament Friday evening against Grove City. The Big Red will take on regional host York on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the third round of the national tournament.

Denison took a 4-2 lead after the first 15 minutes of action, before Grove City tallied five goals to the Big Reds three to tie the game at 7-7 going into the half. The third period would see Denison outscore the Wolverines 4-3 for a one goal lead heading into the final 15 minutes. Each team would net three goals which secured the 14-13 victory for Denison. 

Camden Bowdy (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) led the Big Red with six points thanks to three goals and three assists. Luke Fisher (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephens & St. Agnes), Nate Kay (Denver, CO/ Colorado Academy) and Ethan Tyack (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) each posted four points, as Fisher tallied two goals and two assists, Kay netted four goals including the game winner and Tyack scored one goal and dished three assists. Gavin Pappas (Garden City, NY/Garden City) contributed two goals and one assist, while Clyde Bresnahan (Atlanta, GA/The Lovett School) tallied one goal and one assist and Jack Hines (Charlotte, NC/Episcopal) added one goal.

SELECTIONS:

After capturing the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament Title on May 7, Denison earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament which begins this week. The Big Red will open second-round play against Grove City College at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13 in York, PA.

Denison (15-4) qualified for the NCAA postseason tournament by winning the NCAC Tournament for the seventh time in program history with a 12-5 victory over Kenyon on Saturday. The Big Red will be making their 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and be competing in their 46th postseason game since 1982. Grove City (15-4) secured the Presidents' Athletics Conference automatic bid into the tournament after capturing the PAC championship title with a 17-4 win over Saint Vincent.

This will be the second meeting between the Big Red and Wolverines this season. In the first meeting of the season on Mar. 30, Grove City won 14-10 over the Big Red at home. It will be the first meeting in the NCAA tournament between the two teams.

The winner of the Denison and Grove City contest will advance to the third round on Saturday, May 14, to face the winner of the York (PA) and Southern Virginia game at York.
