CORTLAND, NY – The Ohio Wesleyan field hockey team fell, 2-1, to No. 9-ranked Cortland (18-1) in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Wednesday, November 13.

- The Red Dragons were first on the scoreboard at the 1:35 mark of the second quarter as senior Gianna Trunfio found the back of the cage after collecting a rebound shot in front of the goal.
- Cortland continued to apply pressure offensively, firing 15 shots to OWU’s three in the first half.
- After the break and with just 1:32 remaining in the third quarter, first-year Mary Powers (Centreville, VA/Chantilly) scored the equalizer after blasting a shot past the Red Dragon defenders from the edge of the circle.
- Cortland would answer with a goal from senior Keirra Ettere to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead with three minutes remaining in regulation.
- Senior goalkeeper Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) highlighted the Battling Bishops as she tallied 12 saves on 26 shots faced.
- Junior Avery Slucher (Louisville, KY/Christian Academy of Louisville) and sophomore Matti Hyland (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) finished with a team-high two shots each.
Ohio Wesleyan entered the NCAA tournament after earning a share of the North Coast Athletic Conference crown and securing the conference tournament championship. The Battling Bishops cap their 2024 campaign with a 17-5 record and a 9-1 mark in league play. Cortland will advance to the second round to take on the winner of No. 5-ranked Johns Hopkins and Marywood on Saturday, November 16. The second-round matchup is slated for 2:00 p.m.
