Denison Advances, DePauw Falls in NCAA Men’s Soccer First Round 11/15/2025 5:55:00 PM Share: CARLISLE, PA/WHITEWATER, WI – In the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament, Denison (10-5-5) defeated Washington and Lee (11-5-5) 1-0, while DePauw (12-3-5) dropped a 2-0 loss to the University of Chicago (12-2-5). The Big Red will face host Dickinson (14-0-7) in the second round at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, while the Maroons move on to take on the first-round winner of host Wis.-Whitewater (14-3-2)/WashU (13-3-0) matchup at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. DENISON (10-5-5) 1, WASHINGTON & LEE (11-5-5) 0 In the first-round matchup in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Denison applied consistent pressure in the opening half against Washington and Lee, moving the ball effectively in the attacking third and earning multiple corners and free kicks. Big Red junior Justin Crow (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College) had a missed effort in the 11th minute, while senior Kameron Kist (New Albany, OH/New Albany) missed the mark with a shot in the 15th minute and first-year Julian Bozzolo (Chapel Hill, NC/Seaforth) had his shot in the 39th minute blocked by the Generals defense. Washington & Lee managed their best chance in the 14th minute, when Sami Seife tested Denison first-year goalkeeper Alex Provost (Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy), who made the first-half’s only save to keep the score even at 0-0 going into halftime. Denison came out of halftime pressing W&L, generating multiple corners, free kicks, and attacking opportunities throughout the second half. Provost made key saves on shots from the Generals to keep the score level. Senior Phil Koutsaftis (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) finally broke through in the 87th minute with a low shot to the right post, giving Denison a 1-0 lead. The Big Red continued to pressure in the closing minutes, earning free kicks and throw-ins deep in the attacking third to secure the first-round win. Provost made three saves, while facing 11 total Chicago shots to secure the win in net. UCHICAGO (12-2-5) 2, DEPAUW (12-3-5) 0 In the first-round matchup in Whitewater, Wisconsin, DePauw created early pressure, generating several looks in the attacking third and forcing an early save on a shot from sophomore Aidan Whitley (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) in the seventh minute. UChicago struck first in the 25th minute when Alex Gomas placed a low shot inside the left post to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead. UChicago doubled its advantage just before halftime, as Samuel Jimenez finished a low strike in the 42nd minute to make it 2-0. DePauw continued to push after the break, including strong attempts from senior Sebastian Leon (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) in the 60th minute and sophomore Roman Girandola (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) in the 79th minute, both of which required saves from goalkeeper Ali Alamery. Despite generating opportunities late, the Tigers were unable to cut into the deficit. Junior Braden Murphey (South Bend, IN/Penn) led DePauw with three shots, while Whitley and Leon produced the Tigers two shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Sam Ortner (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa East) made three saves while facing 13 total Chicago shots. UChicago held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks, while DePauw placed all three of its shots on goal.
