Denison Advances, Kenyon Falls in NCAA Men’s Tennis Third Round

GRANVILLE, OH/CLEVELAND/OH - No. 2 ranked Denison collected a 4-2 victory over No. 9 Swarthmore, while No. 13 Kenyon fell 4-0 to No. 5 Case Western Reserve in the third round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship.
 
The win advances Denison into the quarterfinal round. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont, California will host the team championship finals, which will be held May 19-22 at Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California. The Big Red will take on the third-round winner of No. 10 Johns Hopkins vs. No. 7 Middlebury in the round of eight on Monday, May 19, at a time to be determined.
 
Although the season came to a close for the Kenyon team, Kenyon‘s Paulo Pocasangre Kreling (Guacimo, Costa Rica/Interamerican High School CATI) will still remain in play as he will travel to Claremont after being selected as one of 32 players to compete in next week's NCAA Division III Singles Championship.
 
Granville, OH Third Round - Denison 4, Swarthmore 2
  • Denison took a 1-0 lead over Swarthmore after doubles with identical 6-4 wins at the No. 1 and 2 flights. Ethan Green (Salt Lake City, UT/Skyline) and Kael Shah (Nairobi, Kenya/ES American School Barcelona (Spain)) picked up the top-flight win just a few minutes prior to Colin Gramley (Sharon, PA/Shady Side Academy) and Jacob Patterson (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) collecting the second flight win.
  • In singles, Swarthmore evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 5 flight, before also winning the top-flight 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 for the 2-1 advantage. Denison quickly followed with a win at No. 6 as Anthony Payiavlas (Warren, OH/ Harding) posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory, moving the team match to 2-all. Patterson recorded a win at No. 3 after taking the first set 7-6 (7-4) and holding a 4-3 lead in the second set before his opponent retired to give Denison a 3-2 lead. The match clinching point came from the No. 4 flight, as Andreas Chapides (Limassol, Cyprus/ES International School) earned the win after his opponent retired. Chapides won the first set 7-6, dropped the second set 2-6 and was leading 3-2 in the third prior to the retirement.
Cleveland, OH Third Round - Case Western Reserve 4, Kenyon 0
  • Despite Kenyon’s doubles pair of Rishil Kondapaneni (Cumming, GA/South Forsyth) and Gianluca Bocanegra (Trujillo, Peru/Montessori International College) being up 4-3 in the third flight, the match was abandoned as Case Western collected two wins at the top-two flights for the one-point advantage heading into singles play.
  • In singles, Case took a 2-0 lead after Kenyon’s Paulo Pocasangre Kreling (Guacimo, Costa Rica/Interamerican High School CATI) dropped a tough 6-2, 6-1 top-flight matchup against Ajay Mahenthiran, the No. 14 ranked singles player in the country. The Spartans added another two points for the 4-0 team win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory atNo. 6 and then a  7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win at No. 5.
