UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH – The John Carroll Tennis program has a new leader.
Torrey McNeal has been elevated to head coach following the departure of
Walt Oden.
McNeal served as the head assistant coach for both the men's and women's tennis teams at John Carroll for the previous two seasons.
"We are excited to announce Torrey McNeal as our new head men's and women's tennis coach," said
Brian Polian '97, Vice President for Athletics and National Engagement. "His level of expertise, his long-standing ties to the Northeast Ohio tennis community, and his student-centered approach make him the perfect fit for Blue Streak tennis as we enter the NCAC."
McNeal helped the Blue Streaks enjoy success in his two seasons as the top assistant on the coaching staff. In both seasons, the JCU men's and women's squads earned berths to the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. This past campaign, JCU Women's Tennis concluded the year as the OAC Tournament Runners-Up. In 2024, JCU Men's Tennis finished as the OAC Tournament Runners-Up.
In his two seasons in University Heights, McNeal has coached a total of 20 All-OAC players, including the 2024 OAC Men's Player of the Year, senior
Logan Langovsky (Green, OH/Green).
"I'm honored to take the reins of this program as we head into the NCAC. The players and I are looking forward to the challenge, and with everything going on around John Carroll, it is just an exciting time to be here," said McNeal.
McNeal has over 35 years of tennis expertise. For the past five years, he has also been the Tennis Coach at Kenston High School, leading the Bombers to five consecutive conference titles and securing a top-ten state ranking for four years running.
A USPTA P-1 Pro for 25 years, he boasts a rich coaching history, including eight years at The Racquet Club of Boca Raton and the most recent four years at The Wembley Club. McNeal currently serves as the General Manager at The Wembley Club.
McNeal, an alumnus of the University of Toledo, not only earned his bachelor's degree in business but also competed as a tennis player for the Rockets during his college years. McNeal resides in Chagrin Falls with his wife Kelly and two children, Max and Brooke.
McNeal is the perfect fit to lead the Blue Streaks into a new era for the program in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
"Having already served as an assistant on our staff, Torrey's established relationships with the young men and women within our program should allow him to hit the ground running and ease the stress of the transition for our athletes," said Polian. "We are thrilled with the results of this search and are looking forward to the future of both of these teams."
