NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Denison senior offensive lineman Canyon Schneider (West Jefferson, OH/Denison) and John Carroll senior punter and kicker Owen Schuckert (Brooklyn Heights, OH/John Carroll) have been named to the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, honoring college football student-athletes for exceptional commitment to community service and leadership both on and off the field.
Schneider and Schuckert are two of 11 players selected from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III, and NAIA, out of a record 195 nominees submitted nationwide.
Schneider, a 2025 team captain, earned third-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) honors in 2024 and has been recognized twice on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team. The senior has volunteered extensively in healthcare settings, assisting more than 225 patients in the emergency room at Licking County Hospital over the past two summers and contributing to over 300 patient visits at OhioHealth’s family medicine office in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
On campus, Schneider serves as chapter president of Denison’s Mission34, a nonprofit organization focused on eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health. In this role, he leads biweekly meetings to equip students with tools for self-care and supporting others. Schneider also dedicates time to coaching youth baseball through the West Jefferson Golden Gloves program and organizes community service activities with Cypress Church in his hometown.
"I am so excited to share this honor with my family, friends, and Denison University. In no way is this award my own, as each person in my life has influenced me to be who I am. This demonstrates that at the Division III level, anything is possible and that collectively, we have the ability and opportunity to make a difference on campus and in our communities," stated Schneider. "I was able to talk with Luke Romick, a Denison football alum who also won this award in 2015. He told me, ‘Be proud that you're making a difference, no matter what accolades come along the way.’ I think that it sums it up perfectly. I hope that this award is a byproduct of lives that were changed from my service, not my life being changed because of this award. I hope that future Denisonians can use this as a spark to take advantage of the platform we have."
Schuckert becomes the third player in John Carroll history to receive the honor. On the field, he earned first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) recognition and was named OAC Special Teams Player of the Year in 2024. He also earned CSC Academic All-District honors for his excellence in the classroom.
Off the field, Schuckert has contributed extensively to organizations supporting developmentally disabled youth and adults, including Spark Specialized Services, Jesuit Day of Service, Night to Shine, Labre Ministry for the Homeless, More Than Food, Kohl’s Kicking Camps, and the Men’s Service Club of Brooklyn Heights.
"This is a blessing from God that I'm able to glorify Him. Ultimately, this award is all about what John Carroll represents: being a person for others. For me to make an impact in this community is a blessing, and it's all I could ask for,” Schuckert stated. “My name is on this award, but this goes to so many other people. So many people have put me in the right positions and allowed me to grow and to give back to my community. I especially want to thank the coaching staff, as they have been fantastic. I hope me receiving this award can inspire others and push them to make a difference in their communities. At the end of the day, if we can all grow as human beings, that's the ultimate goal."
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® was established in 1992 by the College Football Association to recognize college football players and student support staff who make outstanding contributions off the field. The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) took over the program in 1997 and continues to honor student-athletes who go above and beyond to serve their communities. Allstate Insurance Company became the presenting sponsor in 2008. The award spotlights student-athletes who “lead with purpose” across all four-year collegiate divisions, recognizing sustained community involvement, reliability, and positive impact rather than athletic performance.
