Chevalier Named NCAC Hunsinger Award Winner

Recent Kenyon College graduate Andrew Chevalier (Golden, CO/Home School) has been selected as the recipient of the 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference Don Hunsinger Award.

Chevalier, who was a four-year member of the Lords' men's swimming & diving team, capped off his collegiate swimming career by being a key contributor for a pair of national champion teams at Kenyon in 2013 and 2014. He owns four NCAC titles all-time and is an eight-time All-NCAC performer. His top performance at the NCAC Championship meet occurred this past winter as he re-set his own league record in the 400 IM with a winning time of 3:54.18. A four-time participant at the NCAA National Championship meet, Chevalier earned a total of 12 All-American certificates. He recorded three All-American swims at the 2014 NCAA Championship, placing fourth in the 400 IM, sixth in the 500 freestyle and eighth in the 1,650 freestyle. Chevalier opened his career at Kenyon in 2011 by being awarded the Carl Weiant Award as the program's Most Promising Freshman and then capped off his career in 2014 by receiving the program's Captain's Award.

Outside of the pool, Chevalier graduated with a 3.95 grade-point-average as a chemistry major and a physics minor. He was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society in 2013 and was also nominated for the Sigma Xi Honor Society in 2014. He was a four-year recipient of the Kenyon College Science Scholarship and also received the Robert Byrd Scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year.

Among his numerous academic accolades, Chevalier was recognized as the 2014 Capital One Academic All-American of the Year after being the top vote-getter in balloting for the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large selections. He also garnered one of the NCAA's prestigious post-graduate scholarships, which are awarded to the association's most accomplished student-athletes.

Chevalier was also actively involved in the campus community during his stay at Kenyon. He was an active tutor in the college's math and science skills center from 2012-14 and also served as a chemistry lab teaching assistant in the 2010-11 academic year. He also volunteered for numerous community engagements, including Relay for Life, Hospice of Knox County and at local hospitals.

This award commemorates former Oberlin administrator and coach Don Hunsinger, who had a far-reaching influence on the athletes he coached in a wide variety of sports. Over more than three decades, Hunsinger served Oberlin as athletic director, chairman of the department of physical education, had stints as head coach for Yeoman football, baseball, and men’s and women’s tennis, and assisted with the men’s and women’s basketball programs. Four times he earned NCAC Coach of the Year recognition, twice in men’s tennis and twice in women’s. Hunsinger, who retired from the College in 2008, continues to serve the conference as Director of Tennis and assists in the administration of the conference’s swimming & diving championship.

The award recognizes one male senior student-athlete who has distinguished himself throughout his collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Each conference institution can nominate a distinguished male student-athlete for the honor. A committee of North Coast Athletic Conference administrators, in conjunction with the conference office, makes the selection.
