Game 7

The Denison Big Red (33-9) captured the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference baseball tournament title with an 8-1 victory over the Wooster Fighting Scots (30-14) in Game 7 on Sunday at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. Wooster forced Game 7 after claiming a 5-4 victory in Game 6. The NCAC tournament title is the third-consecutive for Denison.

As NCAC champions, Denison has earned the league's automatic bid into the 2022 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. The NCAA Division III selection show will air live on ncaa.com Monday, May 16 at 12:00 p.m. This year's tournament will begin May 20 with 60 teams playing across 14 regional sites. The Division III Baseball Championship is June 3-8 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In Game 7, Denison plated the first run in the top of the second inning as a ground out by Charlie Glennon (New Rochelle, NT/New Rochelle) scored Danny Alvarez (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) to take the 1-0 lead. The Big Red plated five runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 advantage. To start the scoring in the third, Eric Colaco (Richfield, OH/Revere) singled to right field, which plated Owen Wilson (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg). Then Dylan Hunter (Bethesda, MD/St. John's) singled through the left side to score Colaco, Jake Welsch (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown West) singled through the right side to plate Hunter and Daniel Spencer (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) singled to right field, allowing Welsch and Ari Fierer (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) to touch home. Wooster got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third after Ben Hines (Farmington, MN/Lakeville South) tripled to center field to score Dominic Stilliana (Youngstown, OH/Boardman), making the game 6-1.

After two scoreless innings, Denison added a run in the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Hunter which scored Josh Bohn (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle), while Bohn scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch in the eighth. 

Kenny Lippman (McLean, VA/Langley) earned the win on the mound for the Big Red and the tournament MVP honor, after scattering four hits, allowing one run and racking up 14 strikeouts. Christian Johnston (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) took the loss for Wooster.

Game 6

In Game 6, Wooster was first to dent the scoreboard, as Hines singled to left scoring Ben Gbur (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Darby) and a hit batter scored Hines in the top of the first. Denison responded in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 2-2 thanks to a double by Colaco that scored Bohn and a Hunter single to center that plated Colaco.

The Big Red extended their lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning as Spencer singled to right center scoring Welsch. Wooster tied the game at three in the seventh thanks to a solo shot to right by Tyler Chumita (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Darby). The Fighting Scots then took the lead in the eighth as Dane Camphausen (McLean, VA/Landon School) doubled off the left field wall to plate Nick Pett (Perrysburg, OH/St. John's Jesuit) and Gbur singled through the left side to score Camphausen for the 5-3 advantage. Denison cut the deficit to one, 5-4, in the bottom half of the inning as Alvarez singled up the middle to plate Hunter, but Wooster was able to hold on to force game seven.

Wooster's Mitchell Reardon (Liberty Twp., OH/Lakota East) earned the win on the mound, while Gbur collected the save and Denison's George Viebrock (Bethel, CT/Bethel) took the loss.

GAMES 3-5

Only two teams remain after Friday's action at the 2022 NCAC Baseball Tournament, as top-seeded Denison and third-seeded Wooster captured victories to set up a game six on Sunday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m. In the first game on Friday, Denison logged an 11-3 victory over Wooster, before DePauw defeated Wittenberg, 7-2, in an elimination game. Finally, Wooster outlasted DePauw, 5-3 in the second elimination of the day. 

Denison's 11-3 victory over Wooster in Game 3 was highlighted by a 4-5 performance by Denison's Owen Wilson (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg). Among his four hits, the Big Red shortstop collected a pair of doubles and scored a pair of runs in the game. The Big Red also received multi-hit efforts from Eric Colaco (Richfield, OH/Revere)Dylan Hunter (Bethesda, MD/St. John's) and Josh Bohn (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle). Bohn hit the only home run of the contest and finished the day with a 2-for-5 performance, including two runs scored and three RBI. Wooster was led in hits by Dane Camphausen (McLean, VA/Landon School) who was 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI.

In a battle of the Tigers, DePauw pulled out a 7-2 victory in the first elimination game of the tournament. DePauw was the first team to score as the Tigers collected a pair of runs in the third inning. The Indiana Tigers added four more in the seventh which helped propel them to the five-run victory. Brian May (River Forest, IL/Oak Park-River Forest) led the DePauw Tigers with three hits, all singles, while knocking in two base runners. Wittenberg's Austin Morrow (Heath, OH/Heath) also had a three-hit game in the loss.

In the nightcap, Wooster escaped with a 5-3 victory, setting up a repeat of last year's NCAC tournament title. The Fighting Scots were first to score in the game, as Dominic Stilliana (Youngstown, OH/Boardman) hit a solo shot to left field in the third inning. The Fighting Scots scored three in the inning and added insurance runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

Ben Gbur (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Darby) led the Fighting Scots with a two-hit performance, collecting a double, scoring twice and knocking in one runner. Nick Nelson (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) tallied three hits for the Tigers, including a double and run scored.


GAMES 1-2

After two complete games of the 2022 NCAC Baseball Tournament, top-seeded Denison and the third-seeded Wooster captured victories on day one and will face off in game three at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13. Second-seeded Wittenberg and fourth-seeded DePauw will meet up in game 4 at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, in which the loser will be eliminated from the tournament. The winner of game 4 will take on the winner of game 3 at 7:00 p.m. for the right to play in the tournament title game against the winner of game three.

Denison claimed a 10-5 victory over DePauw in Game 1. The Tigers were the first to score, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Denison was able to get a runner across the plate in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to one. The Tigers extended their lead with a run in the top of the third to go up 3-1. The Big Red then plated one run in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to go ahead 9-3. The Tigers were able to add two runs in the top of the sixth, before Denison added another run in the bottom half of the eighth for the five-run win.  

Nine Denison players recorded hits which included four Big Red players with multi-hit games. Denison was led by Dylan Hunter (Bethesda, MD/St. John's) who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored, while Josh Bohn (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, Charlie Glennon (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Ari Fierer (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) went 2-for-3 with one RBI. DePauw's Danny Glimco (Western Springs, IL/Benet Academy) and Cameron Macon (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) both went 2-for-4, as Glimco scored one run and tallied one RBI and Macon scored one run. Kyle Callahan (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) and Evan Barnes (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) both posted two RBI and one run scored apiece after they both belted a homerun in the loss.

Trey Holland (Durham, NC/Trinity School of Durham & Chapel Hill)Kenny Lippman (McLean, VA/Langley) and Will McManaman (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius) all split time on the mound for Denison with McManaman getting the win after throwing 4.1 innings, allowing just three hits and two runs, while striking out three. Will Lucas (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) took the loss for DePauw.

Wooster earned a 5-3 win over Wittenberg in Game 2. The Fighting Scots got on the board first, putting up a run in the top of the first inning. After two scoreless innings, the Fighting Scots added three runs to their lead going up 4-0 in the top of the fourth, while the Tigers plated three runs in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Another three innings would pass before Wooster would add another run to go up by two in the top of the eighth to capture the 5-3 victory.

Ben Gbur (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Darby) led Wooster going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored thanks to a homerun and a triple. Jack Whitehouse (Asheville, NC/Asheville) went 1-for-2 and scored one run, while Eli Westrick (Ashland, OR/Ashland) posted an RBI, Michael Thomas (Minneapolis, MN/Washburn) knocked in a run and scored one and Dominic Stilliana (Youngstown, OH/Boardman) scored one run for the Fighting Scots. For Wittenberg, Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) led the Tigers as he went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI and one scored run. Jack Siefert (Highland Heights, OH/St. Ignatius) went 2-for-4 with a scored run, while Dylan Jackson (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) scored one run and Jared Burick (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) and Parker Gryskevich (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) each collected an RBI.

Gbur, Dean Brown (Kensington, MD/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) and Ethan Samangy (Hudson, OH/Hudson) all split time on the mound for Wooster with Brown getting the win and Gbur posting the save. Austin Luther (Hughesville, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) took the loss for Wittenberg.

SEEDS/PAIRINGS:

After winning its second North Coast Athletic Conference baseball title with a 16-2 record in conference play this season, Denison (29-8) has earned the top seed in the 2022 NCAC Baseball Tournament, which will be played this weekend, May 12-14 at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. Note: Should Denison or Wittenberg reach games on Saturday, the Saturday games will be moved to Sunday due to graduations.

Denison will open play in the tournament on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. against fourth-seeded DePauw (21-15, 12-6 NCAC). In the other opening-round game on Thursday, second-seeded Wittenberg (27-10, 14-4 NCAC) will square off against third-seeded Wooster (27-12, 12-6 NCAC) at 8:00 p.m. In the regular season, the Big Red earned a pair of wins over the DePauw Tigers, 13-2, 12-2, and the Wittenberg Tigers split with the Fighting Scots, Wittenberg taking game one, 13-3, and Wooster securing game two, 13-7.

The double-elimination tournament continues into Friday morning with the winners of the first two contests squaring off at 12:00 p.m. with a slot in the championship round on the line, while the losers of the first two games will meet at 4:00 p.m. Friday afternoon in an elimination game.  

The final slot in the championship round will be determined Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. with the winner of game four taking on the loser of game three. The first championship game will be played Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with game seven set for 30 minutes following the conclusion of game six if necessary. 

While Wooster leads the league with 13 NCAC baseball tournament titles, Ohio Wesleyan has captured eight tournament crowns, Allegheny owns three, Wabash and Denison own two and DePauw and Oberlin have one tournament title apiece.

TICKETS: The prices for admission to the 2022 NCAC Baseball Tournament are $7 for adults and $3 for students and children. Each ticket is good for one day of admission at the tournament.
