2020 NCAC Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Prechampionship Poll
The 2020 NCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held Friday-Saturday, February 28-29, at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville, Ohio. The Oberlin Yeowomen are seeking their fourth-consecutive NCAC title, while the Wabash Little Giants are in search of their seventh overall title. Both squads have been selected as the favorites heading into this year's meet based on pre-championship balloting by the league coaches.
In the men's poll, defending champion Wabash collected all nine first-place votes cast for 81 total points. Ohio Wesleyan claimed second with 72 points, while Wittenberg took third with 59 points and DePauw placed fourth with 46 points. Denison was tabbed fifth just one point behind the DePauw Tigers, while Oberlin (38), Allegheny (30), Wooster (23), and Kenyon (11) rounded out the nine-team field.
Under the direction of 11-year head coach Clyde Morgan, the Little Giants will be led by several veterans and a large contingent of talented newcomers that are primed to land atop the team standings. On the track, Wabash has a good balance of runners between the sprint and distance events. The Little Giants have the top-three times in the league in the 60 meter hurdles and are led by defending champion, senior RaShawn Jones (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central), who holds the league's best time of 8.16 seconds this season. Junior Josh Wiggins (Poseyville, IN/North Posey) has the second-fastest NCAC time (8.24) and sophomore Leo Warbington (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) has the third-best (8.48). Wiggins also has the NCAC's best time in the 200 meter dash (22.53) and is tied for the third-best conference time in the 60 meter dash (7.08), while sophomore Keith Abramson (Avon, IN/Avon) has the second-best NCAC time in the 800 meter run (1:58.34). The Little Giants have two of the top-three conference times in the mile run, led by sophomore Ethan Pine (Greenwood, IN/Greenwood Community), who has the fastest NCAC time at 4:23.82, and senior Sam Henthorn (Westfield, IN/Westfield), who has the third-best time (4:25.58). Henthorn also holds the second-best NCAC performance in the 3,000 meter run (8:44.33) and the third-fastest conference time in the 5,000 meter run (15:46.76). The Little Giants also have the second-fastest NCAC 4x200 (1:31.83) and 4x400 (3:26.77) relays. Senior Jared Strehl (Evansville, IN/Mater Dei) leads the way in the field events for Wabash, posting the league's best long jump (22' 2.25"). The Little Giants will look to several underclassmen to dominate a majority of the field events this coming weekend. Sophomore Max Bigler (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine) has the second-best high jump in the NCAC (6' 4.75"), while classmate Luke Bender (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) has the third-best conference pole vault (14' 0.5"), and sophomore Kamron Ferguson (Indianapolis, IN/Park Tudor) is second in the NCAC in the triple jump (42' 11.75"). Wabash has the top-three conference distances in the shot put with sophomore Isaiah Campbell (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) leading the league (48' 10.25). Freshman Brandon English (Portage, IN/Portage) has the second-furthest shot put distance in the NCAC (47' 9.75") and sophomore Brandon Peck (Brazil, IN/South Vigo) has the third-best conference performance (47' 5"). Peck also holds the second-best league heave in the weight throw (53' 9.75").
Oberlin topped the pre-championship poll on the women's side by earning seven of the eight possible first-place votes for 63 total points, while Ohio Wesleyan garnered the final first-place vote and finished second overall with 56 points. Wittenberg was predicted to finish third with 49 points, followed by Allegheny (34), Wooster (30), Kenyon (26), DePauw (16) and Denison (14).
The Yeowomen, under the direction of 16th-year head coach Ray Appenheimer, are in prime position to defend their league title with several athletes entering the championship meet with a top-five mark in the NCAC in either a running or field event. The Yeowomen's throwing contingent will once again be the focal point of the squad in the field events, led by the senior duo of Naeisha McClain (Columbus, Ga./Brookstone) and Maya English (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala). McClain enters the 2020 meet as the defending champion and currently holds the NCAC's top mark in the shot put this season (45' 1.5"). English, the 2019 weight throw champion, is leading the NCAC in the event going into the championship (53' 2.75"). Senior Cecelia Longo (Glenville, NY/Emma Williard) sits in third in the weight throw (50' 11.5") among conference athletes, while sophomore Malaika Djungu-Sungu (Arlington, TX/Arlington) has the league-leading distance in the triple jump (37' 4"). Freshman Chilly Wallace (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery High School) sits in third among conference athletes in the triple jump (36' 3") and rookie Aislinn Cannistraro (Sommerville, MA/Sommerville High School) holds the NCAC's third-best high jump mark (5' 4.25"). In the pole vault, the Yeowomen will be led by sophomore Sarah Voit (Cincinnati, OH/Mcauley), the 2019 NCAC champion, who holds the best height among conference athletes this season (12' 6.25"), while senior Grace Finney (Grand Forks, ND/Grand Forks Central) recorded the third-best NCAC mark (11' 3"). On the track, Oberlin will look to sophomore Clare Tiedemann (New York, NY/Grace Church School) and Wallace to lead the sprinting events. Wallace (9.42) and Tiedemann (9.50) have the third- and fourth-best NCAC times in the 60 meter hurdles. Oberlin will turn to seniors Oona Jung-Beeman (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) and Marija Crook (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill) in the distance events. Jung-Beeman holds the NCAC's second-fastest 800 meter time (2:18.34) and third-best conference mile time (5:09.80) this season, while Crook recorded the league's second-fastest time in both the mile (5:06.19) and the 3,000 meter run (10:08.49). The Yeowomen also have the third-fastest 4x200 relay (1:51.60) in the conference.
The first scoring events of the 2020 meet, the heptathlon and the pentathlon, took place last weekend at Oberlin. Ohio Wesleyan junior Courtney Owens (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln) won the pentathlon with 3,388 points, while Oberlin junior Adriano Atallah (New Rochelle, NY/Regis) won the heptathlon with 4,475 total points.
