Wittenberg (8-0, 19-4) has won is 18th North Coast Athletic Conference championship with a perfect conference mark in league play this season. Allegheny (2-6, 6-22) is second all-time with five titles (1985, 88-91), while Hiram (6-2, 22-7), Kenyon (1-7, 3-17) and Ohio Wesleyan (2-6, 11-15) have each accumulated two titles and Wooster (4-4, 16-11) earned the inaugural league title in 1984.
As league champions, Wittenberg has earned the No. 1 seed and the right to host the 2012 NCAC Volleyball Tournament at Pam Evans Smith Arena, November 2-3. Beginning in 2012, the NCAC Volleyball Tournament will be a top-8 two-court format, with quarterfinal matches on Friday and semifinal, consolation semifinals and final place matches being played on Saturday.
In quarterfinal matches on Friday, No. 3 Hiram (6-2, 22-7) takes on No. 6 Ohio Wesleyan (2-6, 11-15) at 4:00 p.m., No. 4 Denison (5-3, 18-8) squares off against No. 5 Wooster (4-4, 16-11) 4:00 p.m., No. 1 Wittenberg faces No. 8 Oberlin (1-7, 8-14) at 7:00 p.m. and No. 2 DePauw (7-1, 23-3) will take on No. 7 Allegheny (2-6, 6-22) at 7:00 p.m. Ohio Wesleyan earned the No. 6 seed over Allegheny with a 3-1 victory over the Gators on September 22nd, while Oberlin earned the eighth and final spot in the tournament after defeating Kenyon (1-7, 3-17), 3-2, on Friday, October 19th.
On Saturday, consolation semifinals will be contested at 10:00 a.m., semifinal matches at 12:00 p.m., seventh- and fifth-place matches at 3:30 p.m., the third-place match at 5:30 p.m. and the championship match at 7:30 p.m.
Tourney Notes: The tournament winner receives the NCAC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament ... Wittenberg is the defending tournament champion and has won 17 NCAC Tournaments all-time. Allegheny follows the Tigers with five tourney championships, including four-straight between 1988-91. Kenyon and Ohio Wesleyan each hold a pair of titles, while Hiram and Wooster have each claimed one ... Wittenberg and Hiram have met in the past 10 tournament championship matches. The Tigers have claimed nine of those meeting; the Terriers won their first NCAC Tournament Title in 2006.
