In 2024, McCarthy led DePauw to a 10-5-6 overall record and a 3-2-3 mark in NCAC play, earning the No. 4 seed in the NCAC Men's Soccer Tournament. The Tigers battled through the tournament to capture the championship and secure the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

In his first season at DePauw (2023), McCarthy guided the Tigers to a 7-7-4 overall record with a 3-2-3 mark in NCAC play, also earning the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament.

McCarthy came to DePauw after spending three years at the helm of the Loras College men's soccer program (2020-22), where he directed the Duhawks to a 29-13-7 overall record and a 15-3-6 mark in the American Rivers Conference.

In 2022, he led Loras to the 2022 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) regular season championship and was named the conference's coach of the year. In 2021, the Duhawks were second during the regular season, won the conference tournament, and earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship, where they topped North Central (Ill.) in the opening round before bowing out in the second round.

McCarthy's student-athletes earned 17 All-A-R-C honors, including the 2022 A-R-C Defender of the Year. Additionally, two earned Academic All-America® honors in 2021.

Prior to his stint at Loras, McCarthy was the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Denison University, where he started in 2012. During his time at Denison, he was also the senior boys director of recruiting with Sporting Columbus SC, pre-academy director of coaching, and U19 head coach for the Columbus Crew SC.

His first coaching position was in 2011-12 as an assistant coach at Southern Polytechnic State University in Georgia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management and Leadership from Capital University in 2010, where he was a four-year starter and helped the squad to the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title in 2007 and 2008. As a captain in his final two years, McCarthy led Capital to the 2009 OAC Tournament title and a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship. He is the conference and school record holder for career goals (69) and points (156) in 80 games and earned all-America honors in 2007 and 2009. McCarthy was inducted into the Capital Hall of Fame in 2021. He earned a Master of Science in Recreation and Sport Sciences in 2015 from Ohio University. McCarthy trained with Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew in 2009 and played with Dayton Dutch Lions of the United Soccer League from April 2010 to July 2011.
