NCAC Weekly Newsletter & Athletes of the Week - 2/13 2/13/2023 4:30:00 PM Share: NCAC Weekly Newsletter & Athletes of the Week - 2/13 Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week – Trey Killens, Wittenberg Wittenberg sophomore guard Trey Killens (Mason, OH/Mason) averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a 2-0 week for the Tigers. In a win over Ohio Wesleyan, Killens tallied a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with three assists. In a win over Kenyon on Saturday, the sophomore netted 18 points, gathered three rebounds, and dished three assists. Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week – Mya Shannon, DePauw DePauw senior guard Mya Shannon (Morris, IL/Morris) averaged 19.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals, while shooting 61 percent (14-of-23) from the floor in a 2-0 week for the Tigers. In 23 minutes of action in a win over Denison, Shannon recorded six points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Then on Saturday, the senior netted a career-high 32 points on 11-of-18 shooting (61 percent) in an overtime victory against Oberlin; 21 of those points came in the second half and the extra period. Shannon also added eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and matched her career-high with three blocks in the win over the Yeowomen. Men’s Indoor Track Sprint/Hurdles Athlete of the Week – Zeke Bennett, Wittenberg Wittenberg senior Zeke Bennett (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Bradley) recorded a school record time in the 400-meter dash after finishing 15th out of 246 competitors at the Division I Boston University Valentine Invite. Bennett clocked in at 48.00 seconds (48.77) which is currently the top time in the NCAC and the fourth-fastest time in Division III. Men’s Indoor Track Distance/Mid-Distance Athlete of the Week – Conor Kolka, Wittenberg Wittenberg sophomore Conor Kolka (Dexter, MI/Dexter) set a new school record in a time of 14:43.49 (14:52.95) in the 5,000-meter run at the Division I Boston University Valentine Invite. Kolka’s time is currently the fastest in the NCAC and is the only sub-15-minute time in the league. Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week – Chris Slater, Denison Denison sophomore Chris Slater (Hudson, OH/Hudson) broke his own school record and finished second in the weight throw at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Wittenberg. Slater’s toss of 17.71 meters is ranked first in the NCAC and ties him for 30th in Division III so far this season. The sophomore also took fourth in the shot put with a heave of 14.32 meters. Women’s Indoor Track Sprint/Hurdles Athlete of the Week – Zora Shakhan, Wittenberg Wittenberg sophomore Zora Shakhan (Pickerington, OH/Pickerington Central) earned an individual victory and was a part of a second-place relay at the All-Ohio Championships. Shakhan claimed the win in the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 7.84, which currently is the fastest time in the conference. The sophomore was also a member of the runner-up 4x200 relay team that set a new school record after crossing the line in 1:43.30 (1:44.91). The quartet of Shakhan, Haleigh Willison (Crooksville, OH/Crooksville), Meghan Frazier (Alliance, OH/Alliance) and Tymeerah De'Armond (Springfield, OH/Springfield HS) owns the fastest 4x200 relay time in the NCAC. Women’s Indoor Track Distance/Mid-Distance Athlete of the Week – Athena Tharenos, Wooster Wooster junior Athena Tharenos (St. Louis, MO/Mary Institute & St. Louis Country Day School) earned two All-Ohio honors on Saturday at Wittenberg. Tharenos held off Case Western Reserve’s Jessica Kwasny down the stretch to win the 800-meter run in a time of 2:21.86 (2:23.50), which was just ahead of Kwasny’s time of 2:22.02 and currently ranks her second in the conference. The junior also ran a leg of the Scots' third place 4x400 relay that clocked in at 4:12.73 (4:16.10). Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week – Drew Patterson, Wooster Wooster junior Drew Patterson (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) claimed the victory in the high jump after a “jump off” with Wittenberg’s Taylor Weiss (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty) at the All-Ohio Championships on Saturday. Patterson did not miss an attempt through each progression she jumped at through 1.64 meters and is currently tied for the top mark in the league. Softball Player of the Week – Cate Barkdoll, Wooster Wooster first-year Cate Barkdoll (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park & River Forest) batted .500 (7-of-14) with two doubles, three RBI, two walks and five runs scored to lead Wooster to a 4-0 weekend over opponents Centre and Asbury. Barkdoll recorded a hit in all four games and stood out in the team's 9-1 win over Centre with a 4-for-4 showing and two doubles at the plate. Softball Pitcher of the Week – Rachael Dudziak, Wooster Wooster junior Rachael Dudziak (Aurora, OH/Aurora) pitched the program's ninth no-hitter on Saturday as the Fighting Scots opened the season at 4-0. Dudziak pitched all five innings and struck out four in an 8-0 victory over Asbury. It was the program's first no hitter since 2019. On Sunday, she pitched two innings in relief in route to a 6-4 win, allowing just one unearned run to finish the weekend with a 0.00 ERA. Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week – Eduardo Werneck, Wabash Wabash freshman Eduardo Werneck (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil/Colégio Anglo-Americano) recorded two wins for the Little Giants in their matches against Millikin and Rose-Hulman. Werneck earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at no. 6 singles against Millikin and won in straight sets against Rose-Hulman at no. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week – Janaki Jagannathan, Wooster Wooster sophomore Janaki Jagannathan (Malvern, PA/ Whitmore School (WV)) captured a pair of wins in the team's 7-2 win over John Carroll. Jagannathan teamed with Otilia Oita (North Olmsted, OH/North Olmsted) in no. 1 doubles for an 8-1 win. The sophomore then captured a 6-3, 6-4 win at the no. 2 singles position. NCAC Milestones & Records (Feb. 6 - 12) Denison, Indoor Track & Field – Sophomore Chris Slater (Hudson, OH/Hudson) broke his own school record in the weight throw with a toss of 17.71 meters at the 2023 All-Ohio Championships … Sophomore Catelyn Gagnier (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe Woods) broke her own school record in the pole vault with a mark of 3.52 meters at the All-Ohio Championships. The mark is ranked first in the NCAC and 34th in NCAA Division III this year. DePauw, Basketball - Senior guard Mya Shannon (Morris, IL/Morris) netted a career-high 32 points and matched her career-high with three blocks in an overtime victory against Oberlin … Sophomore Camden Brown (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) matched a career high with 24 points in a win at Oberlin and gathered a career-high 13 rebounds in a win over Kenyon. DePauw, Indoor Track & Field – Sophomore Sophie Porter (Westfield, IN/Westfield) won the 5,000-meter run at the Tigers’ Indoor Invitational in a new indoor personal best time of 18:19.07 … Sophomore Ford Baker (Winnetka, IL/New Trier) led a top-three sweep at the DePauw Indoor Invitational in the 5,000-meter run after winning in a new personal indoor best time of 15:02.84. Kenyon, Indoor Track & Field - At the All-Ohio Championships, senior Erika Conant (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon) delivered a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.01 meters, which topped her previous career-best of 4.92 meters. Oberlin, Indoor Track & Field - Senior Chilly Wallace (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) recorded a career-best time of 9.21 in the 60-meter hurdles … Sophomore Kambinachi Obioha (Wauconda, IL/Northridge Preparatory) posted a school-record time of 48.64 seconds (49.42) in the 400-meter dash, a performance that shattered the previous school-best time of 50.10 that Ted Lytle has held since February 21, 1996. Ohio Wesleyan, Women’s Basketball - Against Denison, junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) dished out a career-high 12 assists, tying for second place on the Bishop’ single-game list … Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg, OH/Mechanicsburg) hit the first six free throws against the Big Red to extend her streak of consecutive free throws to 30, tying school record set by Jessica Viertlboeck in 1998-99. Wabash, Men’s Basketball - Junior Ahmoni Jones (Indianapolis, IN/Pike) scored his 1,000th career point in Wednesday night's game at Denison. He is the 31st Wabash player to score 1,000 or more points and is closing in on 500 career rebounds. He would become the 14th Little Giant player to score more than 1,000 points and grab more than 500 rebounds in a career. Wabash, Indoor Track & Field - Freshman Quinn Sholar (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) turned in a career-best mark of 16.28 meters in the weight throw. Wooster, Men's Basketball – The Fighting Scots defeated Hiram 74-66 for its 18th win of the year on Wednesday. Wooster has won at least 18 games in every full season since the 1988-89 campaign … Junior Nick Everett (Salem, OH/West Branch) matched his career-high with 20 points and earned a career-high four steals in a win at Hiram. Wooster, Softball - Head coach Victoria Rumph won her 100th career game with the Scots' 8-0 win over Asbury on Saturday ... Junior Rachael Dudziak (Aurora, OH/Aurora) pitched the five-inning no-hitter for the ninth no-no in program history. Wooster, Indoor Track & Field - First-year Lorenzo Freeman (Fairburn, GA/Riverwood International Charter School) lowered his school record in the 60-meter hurdles to 8.47, while senior Will McMichael (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) lowered his 400-meter indoor record to 49.19 … Wooster’s All-Ohio champion 4x400 relay consisting of senior Joe Shilts (Flemington, NJ/Pingry School), Nick Scherson (Memphis, TN/Christian Brothers), Davis Patterson (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township), and McMichael lowered their school record to 3:24.79, per the USTFCCCA oversized to flat conversion chart … Senior Luke Henke (Wyoming, OH/Wyoming) had a career day on his way to winning the high jump at Saturday’s All-Ohio Championships. Henke cleared a collegiate-best 6 feet, 6.75 inches, and in doing so, upped his career-high by 2.5 inches and was within 1.25 inches of Wooster’s nine-year-old school record.
