NCAC Weekly Newsletter & Athletes of the Week - 4/17 4/17/2023 5:50:00 PM Share: NCAC Weekly Newsletter & Athletes of the Week - 4/17 Baseball Player of the Week – Michael Galanos, Wabash Wabash sophomore Michael Galanos (Crown Point, IN/Andrean) posted a .600 batting average (9-for-15), as the Little Giants went 3-1 on the week. Galanos recorded nine runs batted in, five scored runs and one triple across four games. The sophomore collected two RBI while going 3-for-3 with two runs scored in Saturday's first game against Hiram, a 14-4 win. He then drove in three runs, including the game-winner, with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate in the Little Giants' 7-6 win to complete the two-game sweep against the Terriers. In a 12-11 victory at Manchester on Tuesday, Galanos produced three RBI and added a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI in a non-conference game against Anderson Wednesday afternoon. Baseball Pitcher of the Week – Nick Falter, Denison Denison sophomore Nick Falter (Powell, OH/ Olentangy Liberty) collected his first-career complete game and shutout. Falter pitched all seven innings allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out four in an 11-0 win in game two against Wooster on Saturday. Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week – J.F. Aber, Wittenberg Wittenberg junior J.F. Aber (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) paced the field of 48 with a winning 54-hole score of 202 (69, 67, 66) to shoot eight under on the weekend at the DIII Showcase. Aber tallied 13 birdies with just five bogeys through three rounds. The junior posted just the seventh round of 66 in Wittenberg men's golf history in his third round. With this three-round score of 202, Aber now has the three-round low score record in Wittenberg history, which puts him ahead of former Tiger All-Americans Colin Laszlo (-4) and Cameron Willis (-7), who previously held the three-round low score record of 209. Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week – Grace Lindgren, Wooster Wooster junior Grace Lindgren (Cheboygan, MI/Cheboygan) was the top NCAC finisher at John Carroll's Spring Invitational over the weekend. Lindgren led Wooster to a seventh straight top-three finish with a 36-hole score of 163, placing fourth in the field. Men’s Lacrosse Athlete of the Week – Archer Darrach, Denison Denison senior Archer Darrach (Radnor, PA/Radnor) collected two wins on the week for No. 18 Denison with 19 saves and 11 goals allowed for a .633 save percentage, while collecting seven ground balls and causing one turnover. He finished with 13 saves in a big 11-5 win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday. He helped lead the defense, keeping OWU to 0-for-4 on man-up opportunities in the first half. For Darrach, his .722 save percentage against the Battling Bishops was his second highest of the season. Earlier in the week, the netminder made six saves in a 19-6 win over Oberlin. Women’s Lacrosse Athlete of the Week – Allaire Kotz, Denison Denison senior Allaire Kotz (Bethesda, MD/Connelly School of the Holy Child) finished with 14 points in a 2-0 week for the Big Red. In an 18-7 win over Wooster, Kotz netted five goals on five shots and dished out two assists. Then in a 20-4 victory over Oberlin, the senior scored four goals on five shots and earned three assists. Softball Player of the Week – Callie Rheinheimer, DePauw DePauw sophomore Callie Rheinheimer (Lebanon, IN/Zionsville) went a perfect 3-for-3 to help lead the Tigers to a 6-4 win over Oberlin in the second game of a twinbill. Down 4-2 in the sixth inning, Rheinheimer belted a grand slam for the Tigers. She also tallied one double to go along with her four RBI and two scored runs. Softball Pitcher of the Week – Sydney Silverstein, Denison Denison Sydney Silverstein (Atlanta, GA/ Pace Academy) made three appearances on the week, collecting a 2.39 ERA in 14.2 innings, and earning one win and one save in conference play. During Denison's Senior Day sweep over Hiram on Saturday, Silverstein pitched all seven innings to earn the complete-game victory in an 8-3 win in game one before tossing the final 1.2 innings to pick up the save in an 8-7 win in game number two. Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week – Rainer Holl, Ohio Wesleyan Ohio Wesleyan freshman Rainer Holl (Williamstown, WV/Williamstown) went 4-0 on the week, 2-0 at no. 3 doubles and 2-0 at no. 6 singles. In a 5-4 win over Wittenberg, Holl and Elliot Spicer (Newark) earned an 8-6 win and then the rookie collected a 6-0, 6-1 win in singles. Then in a tight 5-4 loss to Wooster, Holl and Spicer posted an 8-6 win, while Holl notched a 6-0, 6-3 win in singles. Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week – Shadia Amado Aguad, Kenyon Kenyon freshman Shadia Amado Aguad (Arequipa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Presco) helped the Owls clinch the 2023 NCAC crown, going 4-0 over a pair of wins. In a 6-3 upset on the road against No. 22-ranked Denison, the first-year paired with Eleni Dakos (Towaco, NJ/Newark Academy) for a gritty 8-7 (7-5) no. 2 doubles win before taking the no. 3 singles match 6-2, 6-3. Against DePauw, she and Lalasa Nagireddy (Dublin, OH/Dublin Jerome) battled for an 8-7 (7-4) no. 2 doubles win before Amado Aguad cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at no. 3 singles to help the Owls clinch the conference title. Men's Outdoor Track Sprint/Hurdles Athlete of the Week – Tapiwa Gono Phiri, Kenyon Kenyon sophomore Tapiwa Gono Phiri (Ndola, Zambia/Hillcrest National Tech.) shined for the Owls at the All-Ohio Championship, winning the 100-meter dash and setting a program record in the 200-meter dash. The sophomore sprinter secured Kenyon's best finish when he paced the field in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 10.84 seconds. The time was a season-best in the event for Gono Phiri and the Owls. Later, Gono Phiri rewrote the Kenyon record books in the 200-meter dash, recording a wind-aided time of 21.95 seconds to finish second in the event and break the previous program mark of 21.96 set by Carlo Gagliardo on May 4, 2013. Men’s Outdoor Track Distance/Mid-Distance Athlete of the Week – Haiden Diemer-McKinney, Wabash Wabash freshman Haiden Diemer-McKinney (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) won the 800-meter run at Saturday's Indiana DIII Championships held at DePauw and broke the meet and facility record in the process. Diemer-McKinney crossed the finish line in 1:51.18 to eclipse the old meet mark of 1:55.44 held by former Wabash runner Hayden Baehl; his time also broke the Blackstock Stadium record of 1:52.51 set in 2001. He now shares the 10th-quickest in Division III so far this season in the event. The rookie also anchored the Little Giants' winning 4x400-meter relay team that collected a season-best time of 3:20.23, for the third-fastest time in the conference so far this season. Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Reis Thomas, Wabash Wabash senior Reis Thomas (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) won the discus throw at Saturday's Indiana DIII Championships with a top distance of 47.64 meters. His meet-best throw was nearly one meter farther than the second-place mark of 46.73 meters. Women’s Outdoor Track Sprint/Hurdles Athlete of the Week – Anaya Jolivette, Denison Denison sophomore Anaya Jolivette (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco Waldorf) won both the 100-meter dash (12.19) and the 200-meter dash (25.24) at the All-Ohio Championship meet. Both times were new personal records for Jolivette and now rank third all-time in program history for outdoor track & field. In addition, her time in the 100 is ranked no. 1 in the NCAC and no. 35 in Division III, while her time in the 200 is tied for first in the conference and is tied for 43rd nationally. In the final event of the day, Jolivette helped Denison win the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:07.28, which is ranked second in the NCAC. She also helped the Big Red to a sixth-place finish in the 4x100 meter relay (50.40). Earlier in the week during Denison's annual dual meet vs. Wooster, Jolivette won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.70 seconds. Women’s Outdoor Track Distance/Mid-Distance Athlete of the Week – Eleanor Luttman, Ohio Wesleyan Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Eleanor Luttman (Farmington Hills, MI/Farmington) won the 10,000-meter run at the All-Ohio Championship meet. Luttman broke the tape in 42:53.17 to become the first Ohio Wesleyan woman to win a distance event at the All-Ohio championship since 2017, when Sarah Fowler won the 5000-meter run. The sophomore’s time ranks fourth in the NCAC this season. Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Khloe Dubenion, Ohio Wesleyan Ohio Wesleyan senior Khloe Dubenion (Columbus, OH/Columbus Academy) won the hammer throw at the All-Ohio Championship meet. Dubenion’s toss of (172’ 8.00) 52.64 meters bettered the second-place finisher by more than nine feet which set an OWU record, obliterating the previous mark (169’ 3.00) by more than three feet. The senior’s performance leads the NCAC by a margin of more than 12 feet and ranks 13th in Division III so far this season. NCAC Milestones & Records (April 10 – April 16) Denison, Men's Tennis – The Big Red’s 22 wins (22-3) during the regular season are the most in program history, surpassing the previous bests of 18 wins in 1999 (18-1) and 19 wins in 2022 (19-3). Freshman Andreas Chapides (Limassol, Cyprus / ES International School) broke the Denison single-season record in singles with 28 total wins (28-2) between the tournament and dual meet seasons. The previous Big Red record was 27 wins set by Tim Cianciola just last season. Denison, Women's Tennis – This is the first season since 2008 that the Big Red reached 15 wins (15-5) in the regular season. Denison, Outdoor Track & Field - At a dual meet against Wooster, Andrew D'Asaro (Downington, PA/The Hill School) won the javelin, throwing a mark of 58.88 meters to break the previous Denison school record of 57.85 meters set by Steve Gallego in 2009 … During Denison's dual meet vs. Wooster on Saturday, Kylee Silverman (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) set a new school record of 48.89 meters to win the hammer, while Amy Pollack (Topsham, ME/Mount Ararat) was second (48.75 meters), also besting the previous school record of 47.80 meters set by Leah Ackerman. Hiram, Softball – Senior Jeskari Rodriguez (Chula Vista, CA/Southwest) struck out her 148th career batter on Saturday at Denison, which is tied for the seventh-most strikeouts in Hiram program history. Kenyon, Men’s Outdoor Track & Field – Junior Riley Orth (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) and sophomore Tapiwa Gono Phiri (Ndola, Zambia/Hillcrest National Tech.) rewrote the Kenyon record books. Orth broke his own record of 40.68 meters in the hammer throw last weekend with a 43.68-meter toss at the Marv Frye Invitational, and he reset the mark again at this weekend's All-Ohio Championship with a throw that traveled 43.95 meters. Gono Phiri finished with a wind-aided time of 21.95 seconds in the 200-meter dash, finishing second in the event and breaking the previous program mark of 21.96 set by Carlo Gagliardo on May 4, 2013. Oberlin, Men’s Lacrosse – Senior Kiernan Stone (Newton, MA/Newton North) set a pair of program records in the Yeomen's 21-9 win over DePauw, including single-season and career bests for caused turnovers. After tallying a pair in the game, Stone now sits at 88 career caused turnovers and 34 on the season. Stone broke his own single-season record from last year (32) and resets the career records from Matthew Basile's 86. Wooster, Men's Lacrosse - Tied its program record with 12 wins on Saturday. Wooster previously had 12 wins in 1983 (12-4) and 1991 (12-4). Wooster, Women's Lacrosse - Senior Hannah Shaw (Menlo Park, CA/Menlo-Atherton) became the program's all-time leader in draw controls during Tuesday's game against Denison. Shaw surpassed Megan Healy's (2016-19) 275 on the opening draw of the second period. Wooster, Track & Field - Junior Dylan Garretson (Newcomerstown, OH/Newcomerstown) upped his outdoor pole vault record to 16’ 2.75” at Saturday's All-Ohio Championships. Junior Ainsley Wiesner (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) upped her school record in the hammer throw to 159’ 10.00” in Wednesday's dual meet against Denison.
