Three Coaches Named to Inaugural OCSA Hall of Fame

The Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA) announced its inaugural Hall of Fame class on Wednesday. Of the six inaugural honorees, three recipients coached at North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) member institutions during their careers, including Gail Murphy, former Denison head women’s soccer coach, Cliff Stevenson, former Oberlin men’s soccer coach, and Ohio Wesleyan’s current head coach, Jay Martin.

Murphy, one of the winningest coaches in the history of NCAA Division III women's soccer, retired as head coach of Denison at the end of the 2022 season. During her time at the helm, Murphy led the Big Red for 26 years, amassing 317 wins. She led Denison to 15 NCAA Division III appearances, eight conference championships and four NCAC tournament championships. Throughout her career, Murphy totaled 350 wins and a .663 winning percentage. She has served on the executive council of the OCSA and earned the association’s Honor Award in 2018.

Before the formation of the NCAC, Stevenson began his distinguished career leading the Oberlin men’s soccer program for eight seasons, winning 48 games with three undefeated season and four Midwestern championships. In 1960, he began coaching at Brown University where in his 31 seasons he won 251 games and 15 league championships. Stevenson’s vision led to the creation of the OCSA.

Martin has led the Ohio Wesleyan men’s soccer program for 46 seasons and is set to retire from coaching at the conclusion of the 2024 season. The legendary coach enters his final season as the winningest coach in NCAA men’s soccer history, regardless of division, with a total of 762 wins. Additionally, Martin is the first men’s soccer coach in NCAA history to reach the 700-win mark. He has led the Battling Bishops to two national titles, appeared in the national semifinals nine times, and won 23 conference championships and 11 NCAC tournament titles. His 44 play-off appearances are a national record. Martin, a past president of the National Soccer Coaches Association, has served a variety of roles in the OCSA and has received the OCSA Honor Award.

The Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association is one of the oldest and most prestigious college soccer associations in the nation having been established in 1953.
