Kenyon Advances, DePauw Falls in NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament 11/15/2024 7:17:11 PM Share: In the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament, Kenyon (13-3-3) captured a 1-0 victory over Spalding (11-7-2), while DePauw (10-5-6) fell 2-0 to Hope (14-2-3). The Owls now advance into the second round and will host Hamilton (8-6-3) on Saturday, November 16, at 1:00 p.m. Two other NCAC men’s soccer teams will kick off NCAA tournament action tomorrow with first-round matchups, as Denison (12-1-6) will host Anderson (IN) (8-7-5) at 1:00 p.m. and Ohio Wesleyan (11-4-3) will face Catholic (10-5-5) at 1:30 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Virginia. KENYON (13-3-3) 1, SPALDING (11-8-2) 0 In the first-round matchup in Gambier, neither team would net a goal through the first 44 minutes of action. With 38 seconds remaining in the half, Kenyon freshman Justin Buchwalter (Houston, TX/Shattuck-St.Mary's School) found the back of the net to give the Owls a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The Owls offense outshot the Golden Eagles 8-4 and earned three corners through the first half. Kenyon had an opportunity to extend its lead early in the second half when sophomore Moustapha Gassama (West Haven, CT/Hopkins) rocketed a shot on goal that was stopped by Spalding’s keeper at the 46:59 mark. Forty-five seconds later, junior Robbie Stroebel (Ashburn, VA/Kiski School) had his shot clank off the left post. The Kenyon offense would dominate the remainder of the game with several breakaways, while recording 15 more shots and earning seven corners. The Owls held Spalding to just two shots and one corner through the remainder of the game. The Owls outshot the Golden Eagles 25-6, and put seven shots on frame. Senior Eamon Dujakovich (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) took a game-high five shots for Kenyon. Spalding put two shots on goal, both of which senior Jack Pedreschi (Shirley, MA/Groton School) would stop to earn the shutout win between the pipes. HOPE (14-2-3) 2, DEPAUW (10-5-6) 0 In the first-round matchup in Eau Claire, Hope would put the first shot of the game on frame, making DePauw sophomore goalkeeper Sam Ortner (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa East) come up with the early save just 1:32 into the matchup. The Tigers had their first scoring opportunity at the 12:20 mark when a ball was sent in to first-year Harrison Engel (St. Louis, MO/MICDS) who wasn’t able to get a full touch as Hope’s keeper Daniel Hesselbein came up with the save. The next shot of the game was not taken until the 36th minute, as DePauw senior Alec McCarty (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) took a shot on goal that was stopped by Hesselbein. The Flying Dutchmen would respond with a shot just three-and-a-half minutes later that was blocked by the DePauw defense. The Tigers outshot Hope 4-2 in the first 45 minutes of action, putting two shots on goal compared to the Flying Dutchmen’s one. The Hope offense would come out of the break hot, putting back-to-back shots on frame in the 53rd minute. The Flying Dutchmen would then find the first goal of the game in the 56th minute for the 1-0 lead. Hope would put another shot on frame at the 62:44 mark, with Ortner coming up with the save, before the Flying Dutchmen would add an insurance goal in the 79th minute for the 2-0 lead. DePauw sophomore Matthew Fogo (Lexington, VA/Rossall School (England)) would put the last shot of the game on goal in the 88th minute, but could not find the back of the net. Hope outshot DePauw 9-3, while each team earned four corners. Ortner made four stops in the loss.
