Ohio Wesleyan Volleyball Falls in NCAA First Round

WHITEWATER, WI - The Ohio Wesleyan volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 6-ranked Wis.-Whitewater in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday, November 21, in Whitewater, Wisconsin. 

Ohio Wesleyan finishes the 2024 season with a 16-13 record, while Whitewater will carry a 27-3 record into the second round. The Warhawks will face Wis.-Eau Claire (21-8) on Friday, November 22, at 8:00 p.m. (ET).

  • Whitewater opened the first set with a 2-0 edge; however Ohio Wesleyan would tie the match twice before using a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead. The Warhawks and Battling Bishops would trade leads and extend the match after tying 25-25. OWU would take a 26-25 lead before UWW would tie it up at 26-all, take the 27-26 edge and then earn the 28-26 set victory.
  • Ohio Wesleyan would open the second set with a 3-1 lead before Whitewater would use a 7-0 run for an 8-3 lead. The Battling Bishops would use a 4-0 run to pull within one, down 8-7. However, the Warhawks would never relinquish the lead with a 5-0 run (17-10) and a 6-0 run (24-12) before locking up the 25-14 win.
  • OWU would only lead the third set at 1-0, before UWW would tie the match and take the lead. The Battling Bishops would pull within one at 5-4, but that was the closest they would come to the Warhawks, before the eventual 25-15 loss. 
  • Offensively, Ohio Wesleyan was led by senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron, OH/Huron), who recorded eight kills, while sophomore outside hitters Natalie Dieball (Cincinnati, OH/Lakota East) and Mason Campbell (Columbus, OH/Pickerington Central) tallied seven kills apiece. Solberg and Campbell were the most efficient hitters for OWU, recording .294 hitting percentages, while junior setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, IL/Jones College Prep) produced 29 assists, five digs and two blocks. 
  • Sophomore defensive specialist Avery Krause (Cleveland, OH/Holy Name) led the Battling Bishop defense with a match-high 23 digs, while Solberg tallied a team-high four blocks.
