DePauw Softball Eliminated from NCAA Regional in Game 5

WINONA, MN - DePauw (25-15) collected a 3-0 victory over Husson (27-12) in a must win Game 4 before falling 8-3 to Simpson (33-7) in Game 5, which eliminated the Tigers from the NCAA Division III Softball Regional.

GAME 4: DePauw 3, Husson 0
  • In a must win Game 4, DePauw struck early and relied on dominant pitching the rest of the way, holding off Husson for a 3-0 win in the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament regional on Friday afternoon.
  • The Tigers wasted no time in the top of the first. Sophomore Libby Minobe (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead) reached on a throwing error, stole second, and advanced to third on a bunt single by senior Macey Cox (McCordsville, IN/Mt. Vernon). After Cox swiped second, senior Katie Mathies (Shelbyville, IN/Shelbyville) delivered an RBI single to left to bring in Minobe.
  • Following a strikeout, senior Riley Heim (Indianapolis, IN/Cardinal Ritter) dropped down a perfectly placed bunt single to drive in both Cox and Mathies, pushing the DePauw lead to 3-0 before Husson recorded the second out.
  • From there, the Tigers leaned on their pitching and defense. DePauw scattered just three hits across the next six innings. Meanwhile, the defense stayed sharp, stranding five Husson runners and turning in four consecutive shutout innings to close out the game.
  • Mathies finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, a scored run and a walk to lead DePauw, while Heim added an RBI and Cox and Minobe scored one run apiece.
  • The Tigers collected the win with a shutdown performance in the circle by first-year Izzy Deveau (Ypsilanti, MI/Saline) who allowed just three hits through seven innings of work.

GAME 5: Simpson 8, DePauw 3
  • DePauw fell to Simpson, 8-3, on Friday afternoon despite early offensive momentum and a strong showing at the plate from senior Callie Rheinheimer (Lebanon, IN/Zionsville).
  • After allowing an unearned run in the top of the first, the Tigers responded quickly in the bottom half. Minobe led off with an infield single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Cox. Mathies drove in Minobe with a sharply hit single to short, tying the game at 1-1.
  • Trailing 5-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, DePauw showed signs of life. Sophomore Ella Kuenster (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park and River Forest High School) singled to left, setting the stage for Rheinheimer, who launched a two-run home run to left field to pull the Tigers within two.
  • Despite the momentum, Simpson continued to capitalize on DePauw's defensive miscues. The Tigers committed three errors in total, contributing to five unearned runs for the Storm. Simpson added one run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to pull away.
  • Offensively, DePauw was limited to just two baserunners over the final three innings. The Tigers collected six hits on the day, and were led by Rheinheimer, who went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored, while Mathies added an RBI.
  • Kelsey Schneider (Brownstown, IN/Brownstown Central) took the loss on the mound, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing four hits and three earned runs, while Deveau entered in relief in the fourth and worked 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
