Game 2: Denison 14, Belhaven University (MS) 1
  • Denison baseball unleashed a relentless offensive attack and steady scoring across five innings to dominate Belhaven.
  • The Big Red picked up right where they left off in Game One with four runs in the first inning. Junior Eric Sundgren (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) sent a two-run homer to right field immediately, scoring sophomore Jack Lutte (Venetia, PA/Peters Township). Junior Cade Nowik (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) singled to left center, which drove senior Eric Colaco (Richfield, OH/Revere) to the plate, then junior Max Fishbein (Atlanta, GA/Druid Hills) hit a ground ball sending senior Jake Blozy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) home for a 4-0 start.
  • Although Belhaven mustered one run in the bottom of the first, Denison replicated its opening with four more runs in the top of the second, all by the same players. Sundgren delivered another two-run homer to right center, while Colaco and Blozy advanced by a walk and passed ball.
  • Already up 8-1, Denison extended its lead in the top of the fourth with two runs from Fishbein and Blozy, with the senior collecting his third score on the day. Colaco also secured his third score in the fifth inning, assisted by Blozy firing a single down the right field line and stretching the lead to 11-1.
  • Denison tacked on another three runs in the sixth. A double down the right field line from Lutte granted junior Alex Vasquez (Evanston, Ill. Evanston Township) a trip to home plate. Then Sundgren supplied his third home run of the day, driving in Lutte to solidify the 14-run afternoon.
  • Sundgren, Lutte, Colaco and Blozy all contributed three scores for the Big Red, with Sundgren accumulating six RBI and Lutte adding two doubles.
  • Denison limited Belhaven to one run, with sophomore Peter Lemke (Geneva, Ill. St. Francis) secured the win on the mound for his 11th victory on the season. Lemke struck out three of the 27 batters he faced, while only allowing six hits across 7.0 innings.
