Wooster graduate
Mariam Zayour (North Royalton, OH/North Royalton) was recently recognized by the publication
Diverse: Issues In Higher Education as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.
Those named a 2025 Artur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar have maintained at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, are at least sophomores academically, and have been active on campus or in their communities.
Of nearly 700 scholar-athletes nominated, one male and one female athlete was selected as Sports Scholar of the Year. In addition to this year's
eight finalists, winners from each sport category nominated were recognized.
Zayour led the field in women's swimming and diving, making her one of 33 student-athletes across NCAA divisions to lead their respective sport.
Highlights from Zayour's senior season include winning the 400 individual medley consolation final at the NCAC Championships after touching the wall in 4:45.41 and placing third in the 200 backstroke consolation finals in 2:16.73.
In addition, Zayour's community service activities include helping restore Wooster parks, volunteering as a Wooster Health coach, and volunteering with Techbridge girls from ages 8 to 14 and encouraging them to pursue STEM.
Zayour has also earned numerous scholarships and awards including the Dean's Scholarship, Whitmore Williams Science Scholarship award, NCAC scholar athlete award, Rindsfoos scholarship, HM Heitmann scholarship and the Huffer Life sciences endowed scholarship.
