SPRINGFIELD, OH – After seven years as an assistant coach for Wittenberg’s men’s lacrosse program, Daniel Shields has been named head coach of Wittenberg University Women’s Lacrosse.

“We are excited to announce Danny as our new head coach for Wittenberg Women’s Lacrosse,” said Wittenberg Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Brian Agler ‘80. “His work ethic is impressive. He has the ability to elevate our play on the field, and his recruiting efforts will serve the program well. We are committed to improving our program.”

A native of Perth, Australia, Shields joined the Tiger men's lacrosse coaching staff in 2018. He helped Wittenberg to an overall record of 42-61 as an assistant with the program, including a record of 25-32 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).

Shields moved to the United States before his junior year of high school. A crafty attackman during his playing years, Shields spent one year at lacrosse junior college powerhouse Onondaga Community College, where he was a part of the Lazers' 2010 national championship team. He then transferred to the University of Mount Olive, where he earned three first-team all-conference selections.

Following his playing career, Shields went back to coach his high school alma mater, Mercer Island, helping the team to a 22-1 record and the 2015 state championship while serving as offensive coordinator. He went on to be an assistant coach, serving as the offensive coordinator and goalie coach, at Tusculum College in Tennessee. His success at Tusculum included increasing offensive productivity by one goal per game and the program's first appearance in its conference playoffs.

“"I’m incredibly honored and excited to be the new head coach of women’s lacrosse,” Shields said. “I want to thank Brian Agler and the administration for this opportunity. I’m looking forward to building strong relationships, fostering a competitive and supportive team culture, and helping our student-athletes grow both on and off the field. I can’t wait to get started!"

Shields succeeds Becca Joseph, Wittenberg class of 2017, who led the Tiger women’s lacrosse program for the last four years. Joseph posted an overall record of 17-47 as the Tigers' head coach. Most recently, Wittenberg finished the 2025 campaign with a 4-11 mark.
