Denison Falls 3-1 in Overtime of NCAA Men's Soccer First Round

LANCASTER, PA - Denison (12-5-3) fell 3-1 in double overtime to No. 7-ranked Connecticut College (12-5-1) in the first round of the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament on Friday, November 10. Connecticut College will advance to the second round to take on Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, November 11, at 6:00 p.m.

The Camels capitalized on a corner kick just 2:52 into the game, as Alessandro Horvath Diano directed the ball to Marco Cerezo, who then headed the ball to Jack Marvel for the finish and 1-0 lead. Just under ten minutes later, the Big Red converted on a corner of their own, as Kameron Kist (New Albany, OH/New Albany) set up Rohan Tripathy (Clayton, MO/Clayton) to even the match at 1-1. Through the final 32 minutes of the first half, neither team would score the go-ahead goal. It was an evenly matched first half as Connecticut Col. took six shots to Denison's five, while both teams put three shots on frame.

The Camel offense would outshoot the Big Red 10-6 and earn four corners to the Big Red's one through the second half. With just 53 seconds remaining in regulation, Jake Krueger (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) would look to net the game-winner after making a steal for a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper, but his shot went wide of the net and time expired with the score knotted at one-all.

At the 94:08 mark of the first overtime, Denison would commit a foul in the box and Connecticut Col. took the 2-1 advantage thanks to a successful penalty kick by Elliot Spatz. After another Denison foul in the box, the Camels would add an insurance goal in the second overtime thanks to Matt Scoffone. Scoffone would have his penalty kick attempt stopped by Big Red goalkeeper Tommy Prokos (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South), but connected on the rebound for the final goal of the 3-1 victory.

Connecticut College outshot Denison 22-14, while earning nine corners to the Big Red's three. Prokos made seven stops in the loss, while Peter Silvester recorded five saves in the first round win.
