CLEVELAND, OH - The No. 17 Kenyon men's soccer team (15-5-1) tied No. 18 Washington College (12-2-6) 1-1 in regulation and two scoreless overtime periods before suffering a 4-5 disadvantage in penalty kicks while Ohio Wesleyan (13-6-1) fell to No. 21 University of Chicago (10-2-5) 2-1, in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday, Nov. 12.
The Kenyon game was scoreless over the first 45 minutes; however, the Owls controlled the field offensively. The Kenyon duo of junior forward
Alem Duratovic (Deerfield, IL/Adlai E. Stevenson) and junior midfielder
Eamon Dujakovich (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) fired off six of the Owls’ eight shots, applying pressure to the Shoremen defense. During the second half, Duratovic, the 2023 NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, continued to try to find the back of the net by adding two more shots, but it was not enough to fight off Washington College. At the 74:15-mark
Harrison Malone made a high right shot past Kenyon defenders, finding the back of the goal and making the score 1-0 in favor of the Shoremen. Owl senior Max Thesing (Westerville, OH, Wellington) was credited with a goal off a Kenyon corner kick in the 79:19 minute, making the score 1-1 to keep the Owls in the game. Both teams remained scoreless after regulation and two overtime periods, forcing the Owls and Shoremen to penalty kicks. After a save by
Anthonoy Pinto in the fourth round of the shootout, Washington registered a 5-4 edge in in penalty kicks to advance. The Kenyon defense was highlighted by junior goalkeeper
Jack Pedreschi (Shirley, MA/Groton School), who tallied five saves during four periods of play. Washington advances to take on No. 2-ranked Mary Washington, while Kenyon caps its 2023 campaign with a 15-5-1 record and it’s eighth straight NCAC championship.
The Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops were quick to score and establish a 1-0 advantage over the reigning national champions, No. 21 U. Chicago, in the second round of the NCAA DIII tournament. At the 32:20-mark, sophomore forward
Rowan Kriebel (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) bested the Maroons’ defenders and snuck a quick shot past
Will Boyes. During the second half,
Ryan Yetishefsky fired a low left shot past senior goalkeeper
Mason Taylor (Marysville, OH/Marysville) to tie the score for Chicago (1-1). Chicago took the lead for good after
Robbie Pino placed the ball in the back of the net with just 39 seconds remaining in regulation. The Bishops were highlighted by Taylor, who made seven difficult saves throughout the game. The Maroon’s will advance to face No. 10-ranked Calvin in the third round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament. Ohio Wesleyan closes out its season with a 13-6-1 record.
