NCAC Weekly Newsletter & Athletes of the Week - 3/27 3/27/2023 5:15:00 PM Share: NCAC Weekly Newsletter & Athletes of the Week - 3/27 Baseball Player of the Week – Chase Whisner, Wittenberg Wittenberg senior Chase Whisner (Newark, OH/Licking Valley) went 8-for-14 (.571), while slugging 1.000 and recording a .700 on-base percentage in a perfect 4-0 week for the Tigers. Whisner tallied 11 RBI, seven runs, five walks, three doubles, three stolen bases and one home run on the week. The senior hit 4-for-6 with five RBI, three scored runs, three stolen bases, two doubles and two walks in a doubleheader sweep of Waynesburg. He then went 4-for-8 in a two-game series with Albion, as he totaled six RBI, four scored runs, three walks, one home run and one double. Baseball Pitcher of the Week – Vince Dolcemaschio, Oberlin Oberlin junior Vince Dolcemaschio (Los Angeles, CA/Windward) matched a career-high with seven strikeouts in a complete-game victory over Carleton on Thursday. Facing 26 batters, Dolcemaschio did not allow a single walk and scattered four hits in his seven innings of work. The righthander's outing was highlighted by an immaculate inning as he struck out the side in the fifth on just nine pitches. Men's Golf Athlete of the Week – Tyler Hilbert, Wooster Wooster junior Tyler Hilbert (Plain City, OH/Jonathan Alder) won his match against Kalamazoo 6-and-5 on Wednesday. Hilbert rolled in a birdie on hole six to get to 1-up and then doubled his lead on the par-4 seventh hole with a par. The junior won four holes in a row starting on hole nine to take a commanding 6-hole lead and clinched the match with a par on hole 13. Women's Golf Athlete of the Week – Ally Siewert, Wooster Wooster sophomore Ally Siewert (Northfield, OH/Nordonia) was the highest-placing NCAC finisher at the Mount Union Spring Invitational. Siewert's 80 was tied for the third-lowest score in a field of 45 golfers, as she helped the Fighting Scots win the event by 12 strokes. Men's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week – Spencer Amacher, Ohio Wesleyan Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Spencer Amacher (Blacksburg, VA/Blue Ridge School) helped lead the Battling Bishops to two wins on the week, recording four ground balls, three goals and two assists. In a 9-8 win over Southern Virginia, Amacher netted the game-tying goal at 7-all with 1:39 remaining in third quarter and then tallied an assist with five seconds left in period to put Bishops ahead for good. Then in a 10-8 conference win over Kenyon, the sophomore assisted on the game-tying goal at 8-all with 1:20 remaining in third quarter and then found the back of the net to put the Bishops ahead 9-8 midway through fourth. Women's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week – Nola Garand, Kenyon Kenyon sophomore Nola Garand (Southborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) helped the Owls go 2-0 on the week, including an 8-7 win over No. 14-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday. Garand tallied a season- and career-high 17 saves against the Maroons, including one save at point-blank range with a little more than one minute remaining in the game. In addition to her save total, she also recorded five ground balls in the one-goal victory. Earlier in the week, the netminder recorded two saves in 30 minutes of action in a win over Baldwin Wallace. Softball Player of the Week – Alaina Di Dio, Oberlin Oberlin junior Alaina Di Dio (Whitmore Lake, MI/Whitmore Lake) hit .600 (15-for-25) with nine RBI, six stolen bases, five runs, two doubles and one walk in a 3-5 week for the Yeowomen in Florida. Di Dio hit safely in seven of her team's eight games, while posting five multi-hit games which were highlighted by a 7-for-7 effort in two games against Keuka. In a 9-4 win over the Wolves, the junior went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four stolen bases, three RBI and one scored run. The next day, she recorded a 3-for-3 performance with three runs, two RBI and one stolen base, as Oberlin shutout Keuka 10-0 in five innings. Softball Pitcher of the Week – Lynnsey Delio, Wooster Wooster first-year Lynnsey Delio (Goshen, IN/Concord) recorded two complete-game wins in 15.1 innings of work for the Fighting Scots to record a 1.37 ERA on the week. In a 5-1 win over no. 20 Millikin, Delio faced 28 batters, allowing five hits, one earned run and one walk, while striking out four. The rookie then struck out five, while scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs and two walks in a 3-2 win over Baldwin Wallace. Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week – Sean Billerbeck, Oberlin Oberlin senior Sean Billerbeck (Olney, MD/James Hubert Blake) went 5-0 on the week to help the Yeomen collect three wins on spring break in Hilton Head, South Carolina. In a 6-3 win over Millikin, Billerbeck gutted out a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win at no. 1 singles, while he and junior Rohan Gold (Forest Hills, NY/The Kew Forest School) were 8-5 winners at no. 2 doubles. In a 4-3 win over Division II Frostburg, Billerbeck and Gold were 6-2 victors at no. 2 doubles. The week concluded with a 5-4 win over Union, as Billerbeck collected a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win at no. 1 singles, and he and Gold claimed an 8-4 victory at no. 2 doubles. Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week – Riley Brokaw, Ohio Wesleyan Ohio Wesleyan first-year Riley Brokaw (Butler, OH/Bellville Clear Fork) went 4-0 on the week. In a 7-2 win at Marietta, Brokaw and classmate Maisie Dugger (Dover, OH/Dover) recorded an 8-6 win at no. 3 doubles and then Brokaw blanked Pioneer opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at no. 5 singles. In a 6-3 win over Franciscan, Brokaw and Dugger recorded an 8-1 win at no. 3 doubles and then Brokaw came from behind to win at no. 5 singles, posting a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (14-12) decision. Men's Outdoor Track Sprint/Hurdles Athlete of the Week – Ari Skolnik, Denison Denison sophomore Ari Skolnik (Glencoe, IL/New Trier Township) finished third in the 110 meter hurdle finals with a new personal record of 15.10 seconds at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open. His time ranks first in the NCAC and is tied for 16th in Division III so far this season. Skolnik also ran the first leg of Denison's fifth-place 4x100 meter relay team that finished with a time of 42.53 seconds, which is tied for 24th in DIII. Men's Outdoor Track Distance/Mid-Distance Athlete of the Week – Brayden Curnutt, Wabash Wabash sophomore Brayden Curnutt (Kokomo, IN/Western) turned in two personal-best times at the Eastern Illinois University Big Blue Open over the weekend. The sophomore raced to third place out of 35 runners in Friday's 5,000-meter run with a career-best time of 14:56.36, the fastest time by an NCAC competitor this season. Curnutt added another personal-best time by finishing the 1500-meter run in 4:03.06 to place ninth out of 60 finishers on Saturday. His 1500-meter time also tops the NCAC performance list. Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Andrew D'Asaro, Denison Denison sophomore Andrew D'Asaro (Downington, PA/The Hill School) finished in second place in the javelin at 51.72 meters, while helping the Big Red finish in second place as a team at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open. D'Asaro's throw in the javelin is ranked first in the NCAC and 29th in Division III. Women's Outdoor Track Sprint/Hurdles Athlete of the Week – Sophia Ellerkmann, Denison Denison junior Sophia Ellerkmann (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park Country School) earned a sixth-place finish with a personal-best time of 1:00.00 in the 400 meter dash at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open. Her time in the 400 is ranked first in the NCAC and 36th in Division III. Ellerkmann also ran the first leg of the Big Red's 4x400 meter relay team that finished in fifth place with a time of 4:08.47, which is a top time in the NCAC and 25th in DIII. Women's Outdoor Track Distance/Mid-Distance Athlete of the Week – Erin Anderson, Denison Denison senior Erin Anderson (Elmhurst, IL/Culver Academies) earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 2:18.01 in the 800-meter run and helped Denison come in fifth place with a time of 4:08.47 in the 4x400 meter relay at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open. Her time in the 800 is ranked first in the NCAC and 15th in Division III, while the Big Red's time in the 4x400 is also first in the NCAC and 25th in DIII. Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Ari McPheters, Ohio Wesleyan Ohio Wesleyan senior Ari McPheters (Reynoldsburg, OH/Bishop Hartley) won the shot put event at Muskingum's Amy Adams Memorial Invitational. The seniors recorded a throw of 43' 5.25", which was nearly three feet further than the runner-up. McPheters' throw is tops in the NCAC and ranks second in all of Division III. NCAC Milestones & Records (March 20 – 26) DePauw, Women's Lacrosse – Sophomore midfielder Bridget Driscoll (New Albany, IN/New Albany) broke her own program record with 19 draw controls at Saint Mary's on Wednesday. Driscoll held the record of 13 which she set in the season-opening win at Carthage. Wooster, Men's Lacrosse – The Fighting Scots are 10-0 for the first time in program history and logged the program's first 10-game winning streak.
