DePauw Football Collects 45-20 NCAA Second Round Victory

GREENCASTLE, IN - DePauw (11-0) captured a 45-20 victory over Maryville (TN) (9-2) in the second round of the NCAA Division III football championships on Saturday, Nov. 30, in Greencastle, Indiana. The Tigers will host Johns Hopkins (10-1) on December 7, at 12:00 p.m. in the third round of the playoffs, as the Blue Jays defeated Grove City (9-2) 17-14 in their second round matchup. This is the first time in program history that DePauw has advanced into the third round of the playoffs.

DEPAUW (11-0) 45, MARYVILLE (9-2) 20
  • After Maryville went three-and-out to start the game, DePauw used an 11-play, 74-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead with 8:38 remaining in the first quarter. Junior running back Caden Whitehead (Indianapolis, IN/Park Tudor) used a one-yard rush to score the first touchdown of the game. 
  • On the Scots next drive, they would get to the DePauw 41 before senior linebacker Jonathan Bruder (Centerville, OH/Centerville) would recover a fumble. The Tigers would run five plays to put another three points on the board with a successful field goal by sophomore kicker Matthew Berry (Jacksonville, FL/Bolles School) for a ten-point lead with under six minutes remaining in the first quarter. 
  • The Scots would use up 7:13 of the clock to run 13 plays and go 72 yards to cut the deficit to 10-6 with a touchdown and failed extra point attempt. DePauw responded with an 11-play drive, going 61 yards to extend the Tigers' lead to 17-6 with 7:35 remaining in the second quarter, as Whitehead scored his second touchdown of the game off a four-yard rush for the 11-point edge. 
  • After a three-and-out by Maryville with 45 seconds remaining in the half, DePauw would go 53 yards, as senior quarterback Nathan McCahill (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) connected with junior wide receiver Robby Ballentine (Crown Point, IN/Andrean) for a 29-yard touchdown and a 24-6 lead heading into the locker room.
  • In the second half, DePauw put together a four-play, 71-yard drive for another score to extend the lead to 31-6 at the 12:41 mark thanks to a 61-yard rush by sophomore running back Carson Johnson (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral). Maryville responded with an eight-play, 79-yard drive of their own to cut the deficit to 31-13 with 9:06 left in the third quarter. The Tigers would connect for another touchdown after McCahill found Ballentine for a 72-yard score for a 38-13 advantage with 4:13 left in the third quarter. 
  • DePauw would add another seven points to the board for a 45-13 lead after a 95-yard, 12-play drive ending in a two-yard rushing touchdown by junior running back Seth Mencer (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) with 8:14 remaining in the game. With under four minutes left, Maryville would use a 10-play, 89-yard drive to post a touchdown and an extra point for the last score of the game in the 45-20 win for the Tigers. 
  • McCahill finished the game completing 21-of-32 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Johnson was the Tigers leading rusher, compiling 69 yards on just three attempts, and one touchdown. Whitehead and Ballentine each recorded two touchdowns apiece, as Whitehead totaled 57 yards and Ballentine collected 192 yards. The DePauw defense was led by Bruder, who made nine tackles (6 solo, 3 asst.).
